🎧 Listen to the Story · 7:40

Ethan is a curious boy who loves animals but has never had a pet of his own. When he visits the animal shelter with his mom, he meets two small pet rats and decides to adopt them both. He names the bold, playful cream-and-white rat Pip and the shy, gentle grey-and-white rat Nibbles, and sets up a cozy cage for them at home.

Noticing that the rats seem bored, Ethan puts his tool pouch to use and builds them a climbing toy with cardboard tubes, wooden blocks, ramps, tunnels and a little hammock. Pip scrambles to the top right away, while Nibbles needs gentle encouragement before she finds her courage. As the days pass, Ethan learns how to care for his pets properly, giving them fresh food and water and keeping their cage clean, and he discovers that rats groom themselves and are very clean animals.

When his friend Mia visits and admits she finds rats scary, Ethan shows her how to offer a piece of apple and let Nibbles come to her. Mia is surprised to find the rats soft and friendly, and together the two children build an even bigger playground for them. The story teaches young readers that understanding animals helps us treat them with care and respect, and that kindness and a safe home are what every pet needs.

A Chapter from the Book

The Boy and the Pet Rat Jane MEADOW

Ethan was a curious boy with light tan skin and short wavy chestnut-brown hair. He had warm hazel eyes and a round friendly face with a few freckles across his nose. He loved animals of all kinds, but he had never had a pet of his own. One day, he visited the animal shelter with his mom. "Look!" Ethan said, pointing to a cage. Inside were two small rats with bright eyes and twitchy whiskers. 1

The shelter lady smiled. "These are pet rats, Ethan. They are smart and friendly." Ethan watched the rats. One had soft cream-and-white fur and wore a tiny blue ribbon collar with a small silver bell. The other had grey-and-white fur and a tiny red harness with a small gold star charm. "They're not scary at all," Ethan said. "They're cute!" He decided to adopt both of them that very day. 2

Ethan named the cream-and-white rat Pip and the grey-andwhite rat Nibbles. Pip was bold and playful, always the first to explore. Nibbles was shy and gentle, with chubby cheeks and twitchy whiskers. At home, Ethan set up a cozy cage with soft bedding, a water bottle, and tasty food. "Welcome home, little friends," he said. The rats sniffed around and wiggled their noses. Ethan was so happy to have pet rats of his own. 3

The next day, Ethan noticed that Pip and Nibbles looked bored in their cage. They needed more fun and exercise. Ethan had an idea. He put on his blue denim overalls and his white sneakers with green laces. He grabbed his small green canvas tool pouch. "I'm going to build you a climbing toy!" he told the rats. Pip's black beady eyes sparkled, and Nibbles peeked out from under the bedding. 4

Ethan gathered cardboard tubes, small wooden blocks, and safe glue. He worked carefully, making sure everything was sturdy and safe. He built a tall climbing frame with ramps and tunnels. He added a little hammock for resting. "This will be so much fun!" he said. Pip and Nibbles watched with interest. Their long pink tails twitched with excitement. Ethan placed the toy in the cage and stepped back to see what they would do. 5

Pip was the first to try the new climbing toy. She scrambled up the ramp, her blue ribbon collar jingling. She reached the top and looked down proudly. "Squeak!" she seemed to say. Nibbles watched from below, a little unsure. Ethan gently encouraged her. "It's okay, Nibbles. You can do it!" Slowly, Nibbles climbed the ramp. Her red harness with the gold star charm glinted. She made it to the top, and Ethan cheered. 6

From that day on, Pip and Nibbles loved their climbing toy. They raced up and down the ramps and explored every tunnel. Pip was always looking for snacks, stuffing her cheeks with treats. Nibbles found cozy hiding spots and loved to cuddle in the hammock. Ethan laughed at their funny antics. He built more toys: a maze and a little swing. The rats were so playful and smart! 7

Ethan took good care of his pet rats. Every morning, he gave them fresh food and water. He cleaned their cage and made sure their bedding was soft and dry. He learned that rats are very clean animals. They groom themselves and each other. Pip and Nibbles were happy and healthy. "You are the best pets," Ethan told them. They nuzzled his fingers with their tiny pink noses. 8

One day, Ethan's friend Mia came to visit. She saw the rats and took a step back. "Rats? Aren't they scary?" she asked. Ethan smiled. "No, they're not scary at all. They're smart and friendly. Would you like to meet them?" Mia wasn't sure. She watched as Pip climbed her toy and Nibbles hid in a tunnel. "They look... kind of cute," Mia admitted. 9

Ethan showed Mia how to feed the rats. He gave her a small piece of apple. "Hold it out and stay still," he said. Mia held out the apple, and Nibbles slowly came out of her tunnel. She sniffed the apple and gently took it from Mia's hand. Mia giggled. "That tickles!" Then Pip came over and took a piece too. "They're so soft," Mia said. She was surprised at how friendly they were. 10

Mia began to see how playful the rats were. Pip did a little trick, standing on her hind legs to reach a treat. Nibbles cuddled in Mia's lap, her chubby cheeks twitching. "They're wonderful!" Mia said. "I didn't know rats could be such fun pets." Ethan nodded. "Understanding animals helps us treat them with care and respect. They just need kindness and a safe home." Mia agreed. 11

Ethan and Mia decided to build a bigger climbing toy together. They used cardboard boxes, tubes, and safe glue. They made a whole playground for Pip and Nibbles, with ramps, bridges, and a little ball pit. The rats explored every new part. Pip was the first to try the ball pit, diving in and rolling around. Nibbles found a cozy corner and made a nest. They played for hours. 12

Ethan's family came to see the rats too. His little sister was a bit nervous at first. But Ethan showed her how gentle the rats were. "They have tickly whiskers," she said, laughing. "Can I pet them?" Ethan showed her how to stroke their soft fur. Pip and Nibbles enjoyed the attention. Everyone saw that rats can be wonderful pets. They were no longer afraid.
