In the wide, sandy desert, Cora the camel is strong and dependable, carrying water and supplies for caravans. Her sandy-tan fur blends with the dunes, and her teal saddle blanket with orange tassels flaps gently as she walks. Everyone trusts her to lead the way. Not far away, Fifi the tiny fennec fox pops out of a burrow. Her pale cream fur is soft, and her huge ears stand up like radar dishes. With a sky-blue scarf and a silver compass charm, Fifi is curious and quick, always eager to explore. When Cora and Fifi meet at a small oasis, they decide to travel together: Cora carries the heavy loads, and Fifi spots the tiny landmarks.

The next day, a caravan gathers to cross the desert. Cora kneels so travelers can load her saddlebags, and Fifi runs ahead, sniffing the air and calling, 'Follow me!' The journey begins well, but by midday the sun is fierce, and the dunes look unfamiliar. The wind has shifted the sand, and the caravan is lost. Cora keeps her voice calm, and Fifi climbs onto Cora's hump to get a better view. From her high perch, Fifi's sharp eyes spot a line of flat rocks that might be a trail. She leads the way, and Cora follows with the heavy bags, keeping everyone together. As they climb a hill, Fifi's big ears catch the sound of trickling water. They find an oasis, and everyone drinks and rests. The child who was scared hugs Fifi, and the travelers thank them. Cora and Fifi realize that their different strengths make them a great team. This heartwarming story teaches children the value of teamwork, trust, and appreciating each other's unique abilities.

A Chapter from the Book

The Camel and the Fennec Jane MEADOW

In the wide, sandy desert, the sun shines hot and bright. Cora the camel walks slowly over the dunes. Her sandy-tan fur matches the sand, and her teal saddle blanket with orange tassels flaps gently. She carries red and gold saddlebags full of water and supplies for the caravan. Cora is strong and dependable, and everyone trusts her to lead the way. 1

Not far away, a tiny fennec fox named Fifi pops out of a burrow. Her pale cream fur is soft, and her huge ears stand up like two little radar dishes. Around her neck, a sky-blue scarf with a silver compass charm flutters in the breeze. Fifi is curious and quick, and her bright amber eyes see everything. She loves to explore the desert. 2

Cora and Fifi meet by a small oasis. 'Hello, little one,' says Cora in her calm, friendly voice. 'What are you doing out here?' Fifi twitches her big ears and smiles. 'I'm looking for adventure!' she says. 'And I'm very good at finding things.' Cora laughs softly. 'Then perhaps we can travel together. I carry the heavy loads, and you can spot the tiny landmarks.' 3

The next day, a caravan gathers to cross the desert. There are bags of grain, jars of water, and tired travelers. Cora kneels down so they can load her saddlebags. Fifi runs ahead, her little nose sniffing the air. 'Follow me!' she calls. 'I'll find the safest path.' The travelers smile at the tiny fox with the big ears, and the journey begins. 4

The caravan moves slowly through the hot sand. Cora's broad, soft-padded feet step steadily, leaving deep prints behind. Fifi darts ahead, her sky-blue scarf fluttering. She stops often to look at small rocks, dry bushes, and tiny hills. 'This way!' she squeaks. 'I remember that twisted tree from yesterday.' Cora nods and follows, carrying the water and bags without complaint. 5

By midday, the sun is fierce. The travelers grow quiet and thirsty. Cora passes around water from her brass flask, but she notices the dunes look unfamiliar. 'These hills are new,' she says. 'I don't remember them.' Fifi's big ears swivel. 'I don't either,' she admits. 'The wind must have shifted the sand.' A worried murmur runs through the caravan. 6

The travelers stop and look around. Every dune looks the same —golden and endless. 'We're lost,' whispers a small child. Cora feels a flutter in her tummy, but she keeps her voice calm. 'Don't worry,' she says. 'We have water and each other. We'll find the way.' Fifi climbs onto Cora's hump to get a better view. 'Let me look,' she says, squinting. 7

From her high perch, Fifi scans the desert. Her huge ears hear the faint sound of wind through a distant pass. Her sharp eyes spot a tiny line of stones that looks like a trail. 'Wait!' she cries. 'I see something! There's a line of flat rocks over there. It might be a marker.' Cora turns her head. 'Lead the way, little friend,' she says. 8

Fifi hops down and scurries toward the rocks. Cora follows, her heavy bags swaying gently. The travelers walk behind, hope in their eyes. Fifi stops at each stone, studying the ground. 'These rocks are placed in a pattern,' she says. 'Someone made this trail long ago.' She twitches her nose and adds, 'It leads toward that low hill. I think it's the safe way.' 9

The caravan follows Fifi's trail. Cora carries the heaviest bags and keeps everyone together. 'You're doing great,' she tells the tired travelers. 'Just a little farther.' Fifi runs ahead, then back, checking every landmark. Her sky-blue scarf is dusty, but her eyes are bright. 'The hill is getting closer!' she calls. 'I can see a tall cactus on top!' 10

As they climb the hill, the wind grows stronger. Fifi's big ears catch a familiar sound—the trickle of water. 'Listen!' she cries. 'There's an oasis nearby!' Cora lifts her head and sniffs the air. 'You're right,' she says. 'I smell fresh dates.' The travelers cheer. Fifi leads them down the hill, following the sound of water until they reach a sparkling pool surrounded by palm trees. 11

Everyone drinks and rests in the shade. The child who was scared runs to hug Fifi. 'You found the way!' she says. Fifi's tail wags. 'I couldn't have done it without Cora,' she says. 'She carried all the water and kept us calm.' Cora smiles, her long eyelashes fluttering. 'And I couldn't have found the path without your sharp eyes and big ears,' she replies. 'We make a good team.' 12

The travelers refill their jars and thank Cora and Fifi. 'You saved us,' says the leader. 'How can we ever repay you?' Cora shakes her head. 'Just remember that different strengths make excellent partnerships,' she says. Fifi nods. 'Big or small, everyone has something special to share.' The travelers promise to remember, and they set off again, singing a happy song. 13

The caravan reaches home safely as the sun sets. Cora's red and gold saddlebags are empty now, but her heart is full. Fifi sits on her hump, her sky-blue scarf glowing in the evening light. 'What an adventure!' she says. 'Shall we travel together again?' Cora laughs. 'Always, little friend.
