🎧 Listen to the Story · 7:19

Luna is a ginger-orange cat who loves her garden more than anything, and her favourite thing in the world is to race through it at full speed, her silver bell jingling as she dashes past the roses. One sunny afternoon a slow crunching sound near the gate introduces her to Arthur, a calm tortoise with a domed brown shell and gentle dark eyes who has come to visit the garden. Luna is thrilled and immediately wants to race him to the far end, but Arthur barely moves; he stops to sniff a tiny purple flower and to look at things closely.

At first Luna is bored and impatient, but as she sits and watches Arthur take one steady step after another, she begins to notice what she has always run past: soft green moss that is like a tiny forest, hidden white flowers under a bush, a shiny green beetle on a leaf, a dew-covered spider's web, a snail's silvery trail and a little stream whose sound she never heard before. Slowly she decides to match his pace, and the garden becomes a secret world full of small wonders.

This gentle story for young children is about friendship between two very different creatures and about learning that there is more than one rhythm to enjoy the world. It shows readers that slowing down can turn an ordinary afternoon into a treasure hunt, and that friends who do things differently can teach us to see what we have been missing.

A Chapter from the Book

The Cat's Garden Friend Jane MEADOW

Luna the cat loved her garden more than anything. Every morning, she raced through the tall grass, her ginger-orange fur glowing in the sun. Her cream chest and paws flashed as she dashed past the roses. Her green eyes sparkled with energy, and the little silver bell on her blue collar jingled happily. She never stopped to look at anything closely. She just loved to run. 1

One sunny afternoon, Luna heard a strange, slow crunching sound near the garden gate. She peeked through the flowers and saw a tortoise. He had a domed brown shell with darker patterns and wrinkled grey-green skin. His gentle dark eyes looked around calmly. 'Hello,' said the tortoise. 'My name is Arthur. I'm visiting your garden today.' Luna twitched her whiskers. A visitor! 2

Luna bounced with excitement. 'Welcome, Arthur! I'll show you my garden. We can race to the far end!' She dashed ahead, her white-tipped tail waving like a flag. But when she looked back, Arthur had barely moved. He was sniffing a tiny purple flower. 'Come on!' Luna called. 'You're so slow!' Arthur just smiled. 'I like to look at things,' he said. 3

Luna sighed and sat down. She watched Arthur take one slow step, then another. His short sturdy legs moved steadily. 'At this rate, we'll never see the whole garden,' Luna thought. She felt a little bored. But then she noticed something. Arthur wasn't just walking. He was exploring. He stopped at every little thing. Luna's ears perked up. Maybe she could try something new. 4

Arthur paused by a patch of soft green moss. 'Look at this,' he said gently. 'It's like a tiny forest.' Luna crouched down. She had never noticed the moss before. It was soft and springy under her paws. 'It's just moss,' she said. But Arthur shook his head. 'It's a whole world for small creatures,' he said. Luna looked closer and saw tiny drops of dew sparkling like jewels. 5

They moved on, slowly. Arthur showed Luna a cluster of tiny white flowers hidden under a bush. 'These are so small,' Luna whispered. She had raced past them a hundred times. Arthur nodded. 'Small things are easy to miss when you go fast.' Luna's tail twitched. She was starting to see the garden in a new way. It was like a secret world she had never known. 6

Next, Arthur stopped by a leaf. On it sat a shiny green beetle. 'Look at its tiny legs,' Arthur said. Luna leaned in. The beetle's shell shimmered in the sun. 'I've never seen a beetle so close,' she said. 'It's beautiful.' Arthur smiled. 'There are wonders everywhere,' he said. 'You just have to slow down to find them.' Luna felt a warm feeling inside. 7

Luna decided to follow Arthur's pace. She took one slow step, then another. Together, they explored the garden side by side. Luna noticed a spider's web with dew on it. She saw a snail leaving a silvery trail. She heard the soft buzz of a bee. 'This is fun!' she said. Arthur chuckled. 'I told you,' he said. 'Slow can be wonderful.' 8

They reached a shady corner where a tiny stream trickled. Arthur stopped to drink. Luna watched the water ripple. 'I usually run right past this stream,' she said. 'I never knew it made such a pretty sound.' Arthur nodded. 'The garden has many songs,' he said. 'You just have to listen.' Luna closed her eyes and listened. The stream gurgled softly. It was lovely. 9

As the sun began to set, Luna realized she had spent the whole afternoon with Arthur. They hadn't gone far, but they had seen so much. 'I'm glad you came to visit,' Luna said. 'I thought slow was boring, but it's not. It's like a treasure hunt.' Arthur's gentle eyes twinkled. 'Friends can have different rhythms,' he said. 'That's what makes it fun.' 10

Luna thought about how she used to race through the garden without seeing anything. Now she noticed every little detail. 'Can you teach me more about slow exploring?' she asked. Arthur nodded. 'Of course,' he said. 'Tomorrow we can look for mushrooms.' Luna purred. She was excited to learn more. The garden felt brand new, full of tiny wonders waiting to be found. 11

That evening, Luna curled up next to Arthur under a bush. Her silver bell was quiet. She didn't need to run. She felt calm and happy. 'Thank you for showing me your way,' she said. Arthur smiled. 'And thank you for showing me your garden,' he replied. 'It's the most beautiful one I've ever seen.' Luna purred softly. She had a new friend. 12

The next morning, Luna woke up early. She didn't race out the door. She waited for Arthur. When he was ready, they set off together, slow and steady. Luna showed Arthur a secret patch of wild strawberries. Arthur showed Luna a family of ladybugs. They laughed and explored, side by side. Luna's bell jingled softly as she walked. It was a happy sound. 13

From that day on, Luna and Arthur were the best of friends. Luna still loved to run sometimes, but she always made time to explore slowly with Arthur. She learned that friendship is about sharing different ways of seeing the world. And the garden, with all its tiny treasures, became their favorite place to be together. They were never bored again.
