🎧 Listen to the Story · 6:46

Toby is a friendly golden-brown dog with floppy ears and a red collar who lives in a cozy house with a big garden. One sunny morning a small box appears on the floor, and inside is a tiny grey tabby kitten named Poppy, wearing a pale blue ribbon bow. Everything in the house looks enormous to her, and Toby's big black nose and wagging tail seem frightening, so she hides under a chair and watches him from a distance.

Toby wants to play, but he remembers how his owner taught him to be calm. Instead of chasing or barking, he lies down on the rug, rests his chin on his paws and waits. Day by day he stays quiet and gentle, letting Poppy explore the room and the garden at her own pace. Slowly her curiosity grows, and the story follows the small steps by which a frightened kitten begins to trust a big, patient dog.

The book shows young readers how gentle introductions and patience can build trust and friendship. It is suited to children who are beginning to read longer stories, and to parents or teachers looking for a warm tale about kindness, calm behaviour and giving others the time they need.

A Chapter from the Book

The Dog's Kitten Friend Jane MEADOW

Toby the dog lived in a cozy house with a big garden. He had warm golden-brown fur, soft floppy ears, and a red collar with a silver tag. Toby loved to play fetch and chase balls. He was friendly and eager, always ready for fun. One sunny morning, something new arrived. Toby wagged his long tail and sniffed the air. A small box sat on the floor, and inside was a tiny surprise. 1

Inside the box was a very small kitten. She had soft grey tabby fur with darker stripes, a white chest and paws, and big round green eyes. Around her neck was a pale blue ribbon bow. The kitten looked scared and stayed in the corner. Toby wanted to say hello, but the kitten backed away. "It's okay," Toby woofed softly. "I won't hurt you." 2

The kitten's name was Poppy. She was so tiny she could fit in two hands. Everything in the house seemed huge to her. Toby's big black nose looked enormous. His long wagging tail seemed like a giant snake. Poppy hid under a chair and watched. Toby sat down and tilted his head. He wanted to play, but he knew he had to be gentle. 3

Toby remembered how his owner had taught him to be calm. He lay down on the rug and rested his chin on his paws. He didn't move closer. He just stayed quiet and still. Poppy peeked out from under the chair. Her big green eyes watched Toby's every move. Toby's floppy ears twitched, but he didn't get up. He waited. 4

Day by day, Toby stayed gentle. He didn't chase Poppy or bark. When Poppy crept out, Toby just watched with friendly dark brown eyes. He let her explore the room at her own pace. Poppy sniffed the air and took tiny steps. Toby's tail gave a small, slow wag. He was being patient, and Poppy noticed. 5

One afternoon, Poppy came a little closer. She sat just out of reach and washed her paw. Toby didn't move. He just blinked slowly and gave a soft sigh. "You're safe," his calm body seemed to say. Poppy's tiny pink nose twitched. She was curious about this big, quiet dog. Maybe he wasn't so scary after all. 6

Toby wanted to play so much. He imagined chasing a ball with Poppy. But he knew that Poppy needed time. So he stayed calm and quiet. He showed her his red collar and silver tag, but he didn't push. Poppy watched from a distance. She saw that Toby never rushed her. He never made loud noises. He was gentle, and that made her feel safe. 7

Each day, Poppy grew a little braver. She ventured farther from her hiding spots. She sniffed Toby's food bowl and explored the garden. Toby followed slowly, keeping his distance. He showed her the sunny spots and the soft grass. Poppy's pale blue ribbon bow bobbed as she walked. Toby's tail wagged gently, but he kept his excitement in check. 8

One morning, Poppy did something new. She walked right up to Toby and touched her tiny nose to his big black nose. Toby's heart did a happy flip. He stayed perfectly still. Poppy's green eyes looked into his brown eyes. She gave a tiny mew. "Hello, big dog," she seemed to say. Toby's tail wagged softly. He had waited for this moment. 9

From that day on, Poppy wasn't scared anymore. She followed Toby everywhere. They played gentle games in the garden. Toby would lie down so Poppy could climb on his back. She would bat at his floppy ears, and he would pretend not to notice. They chased leaves and rolled in the grass. Poppy's tiny paws moved fast, and Toby moved slowly to match her. 10

Toby and Poppy became the best of friends. They shared sunny spots and quiet moments. Toby would guard Poppy while she napped. Poppy would groom Toby's fur with her tiny tongue. They were gentle with each other. Their friendship had grown from patience and trust. Toby's red collar and Poppy's blue bow seemed to match, like a team. 11

One evening, they sat together by the window. The moon was bright and the stars twinkled. Poppy purred softly, and Toby's tail thumped a happy rhythm. "I'm glad you're my friend," Toby woofed quietly. Poppy mewed and rubbed her head against his paw. They had learned that gentle introductions build trust. And trust had turned them into a wonderful pair. 12

Toby and Poppy played every day. They invented a game called 'slow chase.' Toby would take one big step, and Poppy would take three tiny ones. They would zigzag through the garden, careful not to bump into anything. It was a game of gentleness and fun. Their laughter filled the air, and their friendship grew stronger. 13

The house felt warmer with two friends in it. Toby showed Poppy how to share. They took turns with toys and treats. Poppy learned that Toby would never take her things. Toby learned that Poppy liked small, quiet games. They respected each other. Their gentle ways made every day happy. 14

One afternoon, a new puppy came to visit. The puppy was excited and bouncy. Poppy hid behind Toby. Toby sat calmly and let the puppy sniff him. "Be gentle," Toby seemed to say. The puppy slowed down and sat quietly. Poppy peeked out. She saw that the puppy was learning just like Toby had. Gentle introductions work for everyone.
