🎧 Listen to the Story · 7:29

In the magical kingdom of Glimmerwood, where trees sparkle like sugar and rivers sing soft songs, a young coral-orange dragon named Ember longs for a friend to share his adventures. One sunny morning he follows a tiny "Yip! Yip!" to a bush and finds Pip, a small golden-tan puppy with floppy brown ears and a red collar bearing a brass bone tag. Ember gently carries the lost puppy through the kingdom, past mushroom houses and sparkling streams, searching for Pip's home. When no one recognizes the puppy, Ember welcomes him into his cozy but messy cave and makes him a bed of soft moss and leaves.

There is just one problem: whenever Ember gets excited, a puff of warm dragon breath escapes his mouth, and Pip yelps and jumps back. With guidance from Luma, a wise owl with lavender feathers and golden spectacles, Ember practices every day to breathe slowly and think calm thoughts. He learns to blow soft, gentle breezes that ruffled Pip's ears rather than frighten him, and the two become inseparable, exploring, splashing in streams, and chasing fireflies. When a storm rolls in and Pip trembles with fear, Ember wraps his warm body around the puppy and keeps him cozy through the night.

The story shows young readers that friendship is a happy responsibility: caring for someone every day takes patience, practice, and self-control. Ember's efforts to master his breath offer a gentle lesson in managing strong feelings and being considerate of others. With its warm setting and tender partnership between a dragon and a puppy, the tale suits young children and read-aloud sessions, especially those learning what it means to look after a friend.

The Dragon's Puppy Jane MEADOW

In the magical kingdom of Glimmerwood, where trees sparkled like sugar and rivers sang soft songs, lived a young dragon named Ember. His coral-orange scales glowed in the sunlight, and his cream belly was soft as a cloud. Around his neck, a blue knitted scarf with yellow stripes flapped in the breeze. Ember loved to explore, but more than anything, he wished for a friend to share his adventures. 1

One sunny morning, Ember heard a tiny sound. "Yip! Yip!" He followed the noise to a bush and found a small puppy with fluffy golden-tan fur and floppy brown ears. The puppy wore a red collar with a brass bone tag that read "Pip." Pip looked up with big dark brown eyes and wagged his short tail. "You're lost!" Ember said gently. "Don't worry, I'll help you find your home." 2

Ember picked up Pip carefully in his two front claws. The puppy felt warm and wiggly, like a little bundle of energy. "We'll search everywhere," Ember promised. He walked through the kingdom, past mushroom houses and sparkling streams. Pip barked happily at butterflies and sniffed every flower. But no one knew where Pip belonged. As the sun began to set, Ember said, "You can stay with me tonight." 3

Ember led Pip to his cave, which was cozy but a bit messy. He gathered soft moss and leaves to make a little bed for Pip. "Here you go, little friend," Ember said. But when he leaned down to tuck Pip in, a tiny puff of warm breath escaped his mouth. Pip yelped and jumped back. "Oops!" Ember gasped. "I'm so sorry! My breath is warm—I must be careful." 4

Pip tilted his head, curious. He wagged his tail and crept closer. Ember held his breath and gently blew a tiny, cool breeze. Pip sniffed it and barked happily. "You like that?" Ember laughed. "I'll practice being gentle." He blew a soft puff that ruffled Pip's floppy ears. Pip rolled over, showing his white chest patch. Ember smiled. "We'll be best friends, I just know it." 5

The next day, Ember decided to build a proper home for Pip. He found a hollow tree with a wide opening, perfect for a puppy. "This will be our cozy house," Ember said. He gathered twigs and leaves, but every time he got excited, his warm breath made the twigs smoke. "Oh no!" Ember sighed. "I need help." Pip barked and ran in circles, making Ember laugh. 6

Just then, a wise owl named Luma swooped down. Her lavender feathers shimmered, and her round golden spectacles glinted. "Hello, little ones," she hooted softly. "I see you're building a home. But remember, a dragon's breath can be warm. You must learn to control it." Ember nodded. "I try, but it's hard when I'm excited." Luma smiled. "Practice makes perfect. Breathe slowly and think calm thoughts." 7

Ember practiced every day. He would take a deep breath and blow gently, making a small, warm breeze that didn't hurt. Pip would chase the gentle puffs and bark with joy. "You're doing great!" Luma cheered from her perch. Ember felt proud. He learned to keep his breath soft and safe, even when he was happy. Pip slept beside him each night, curled up in the curve of Ember's tail. 8

One afternoon, Pip found a shiny pebble and brought it to Ember. "For me?" Ember asked. Pip wagged his tail. Ember's heart swelled with warmth. He wanted to blow a happy flame, but he remembered to be gentle. Instead, he gave Pip a soft, warm nuzzle. "Thank you, Pip. You're the best friend ever." They played hide-and-seek among the mushrooms until the stars came out. 9

As days passed, Ember and Pip became inseparable. They explored the kingdom, splashed in streams, and chased fireflies at dusk. Ember learned to control his breath so well that he could even toast marshmallows for a snack—just a little warm puff. Pip loved the warm treats. "You're a natural!" Luma said. "But remember, responsibility means caring for your friend every day." Ember nodded seriously. 10

One evening, a storm rolled in. Thunder rumbled and rain poured down. Pip trembled and whimpered. Ember wrapped his warm body around the puppy and blew a gentle, warm breath to keep him cozy. "Don't worry, Pip. I've got you," Ember whispered. The storm raged outside, but inside their hollow tree, it was safe and warm. Pip licked Ember's cheek and snuggled closer. 11

In the morning, the sun returned. Ember realized that taking care of Pip was a big job, but it made him happy. He built a little door for their home and a soft bed of moss. Luma visited and said, "You've learned well, Ember. Friendship is a happy responsibility." Ember smiled. "I'm glad Pip is my friend. I'll always keep him safe." Pip barked in agreement. 12

Ember and Pip decided to make their home the coziest in the kingdom. They hung twinkling lights and laid soft rugs. Ember used his gentle breath to warm their home on chilly nights. Pip kept the floor clean by licking up crumbs. They laughed and played, and their home was filled with love. "This is the best home ever," Ember said. Pip wagged his tail and licked Ember's nose. 13

One day, a family of rabbits passed by and admired the cozy home. "How did you build such a wonderful place?" they asked. Ember smiled. "With teamwork and care." Pip demonstrated by bringing a twig, and Ember gently blew it into place. The rabbits clapped. "You're a great team!" Ember felt proud.
