On a wide, sunny savanna, a young elephant named Ellie walks slowly beneath the clouds, wishing she had a friend to walk beside her. Not far away, in a sandy burrow under a thorn tree, lives Milo, a small meerkat with bright amber eyes and a little green explorer satchel, curious about a world that feels far too big for him. When Milo spots the huge blue-grey shape moving gently across the golden grass and calls out, a friendship begins that changes both their days.
Ellie and Milo explore together, and each discovers what the other can do. When a flooded stream rushes too deep and too fast for Milo, Ellie kneels so he can climb onto her back and carries him safely across. When tall grass rises like a green wall and Ellie cannot see a path ahead, Milo climbs to the top of her head and uses his scouting eyes to guide her step by step to a lovely clearing. Through tangled vines, blocking thorns, wrong turns and tired legs, the two friends solve every problem by helping in their own different ways.
This gentle tale is written for young children and for anyone reading aloud to them. It shows that being big and strong and being small and quick are both gifts, and that friendship works best when each friend offers what they have. The story offers a simple, warm lesson about trust, teamwork and seeing the value in someone very different from yourself.

A Chapter from the Book
The Elephant and the Meerkat Jane MEADOW
On a wide, sunny savanna, where golden grass waved in the wind, lived a young elephant named Ellie. Her skin was soft blue-grey with gentle wrinkles, and her big floppy ears had pale pink edges. She wore a simple red scarf around her neck. Ellie loved to walk slowly and watch the clouds. But sometimes, she wished she had a friend to walk beside her. 1
Not far away, in a sandy burrow under a thorn tree, lived a small meerkat named Milo. His fur was sandy tan, and his bright amber eyes were ringed with dark patches. A little green explorer satchel hung across his chest. Milo was curious and quick-witted, and he loved to scout the wide world. But he was very small, and the world was very big. 2
One bright morning, Milo stood tall on his hind legs, sniffing the air. He spotted a huge blue-grey shape moving gently across the grass. It was Ellie! Milo waved his little paws. "Hello up there!" he called. Ellie lowered her long trunk and smiled with warm brown eyes. "Hello down there!" she rumbled. And just like that, their friendship began. 3
Every day, the two friends explored together. Ellie walked slowly so Milo could keep up, and Milo rode on her back when his little legs grew tired. They found juicy leaves, watched butterflies, and told stories under the wide sky. "You see so much from up there," Milo said. "And you see so much from down there," Ellie replied. 4
One afternoon, they came to a stream that had flooded in the night. The water rushed and swirled, brown and deep. Milo stared at it with wide amber eyes. "I can't swim that," he squeaked, his long tail twitching. "It's too deep and too fast for me." He took a step back, looking worried and small. 5
Ellie looked at the water, then at her tiny friend. "Don't worry," she said kindly. "Climb up on my back. I am big and sturdy, and the water won't push me over." She knelt down low so Milo could hop up. He grabbed her floppy ear and scrambled onto her broad blue-grey back, holding tight to his explorer satchel. 6
Then Ellie stepped into the stream. The water swirled around her strong legs, but she walked slowly and carefully. Milo held on and looked all around. "You're doing great!" he cheered. Water splashed, but Ellie kept her balance. Soon they reached the other side, safe and dry. Milo hugged her trunk. "Thank you, Ellie!" he said. "You're the best helper ever!" 7
On the far bank, the grass grew tall and thick. It rose higher than Milo, waving like a green wall. "Which way should we go?" Ellie wondered. She was so big that the tall grass tickled her trunk, but she could not see a path ahead. Milo climbed to the top of her head and stood tall, peering through the leaves. 8
Milo's bright amber eyes scanned the tall grass. He was a scout, and scouting was his special gift. "Wait!" he called. "I see a winding path over there, past the yellow flowers!" He pointed with his little paw. Ellie could not see it, but she trusted her friend. "Lead the way," she said with a gentle smile, and Milo guided her step by careful step. 9
The winding path was narrow but safe. Milo called out, "A little left! Now straight! Watch for that big rock!" Ellie followed his voice, swaying her trunk. When they came out of the tall grass, they both gasped. A lovely clearing lay open before them, dotted with flowers and buzzing bees. "We made it!" Milo laughed. "You spotted the path!" Ellie trumpeted. 10
After that day, the friends had many adventures. When Ellie's trunk got tangled in a vine, Milo's tiny paws untied it. When a thorn blocked Milo's path, Ellie moved it with her strong trunk. When they got lost, Milo climbed high to look around. When they were tired, Ellie carried Milo home. Together, they solved every problem. 11
One evening, they sat by a calm pool and watched the pink sunset. "You know," Milo said, "you are big and strong, and I am small and quick. We are so different." Ellie nodded, her red scarf fluttering. "That is why we make such a good team. Friends can help in different ways," she said softly. "Big or small, everyone has something special to share." 12
Milo smiled and climbed onto Ellie's back for the walk home. "You help me cross deep water," he said. "And you help me find safe paths," she replied. Their friendship made every day brighter and every adventure possible. Wherever they went, the other animals smiled to see the big elephant and the little meerkat walking side by side. 13
Back at their favorite thorn tree, they shared a juicy melon. Milo sat on a flat rock while Ellie munched leaves above. "Tomorrow," Milo said, "let's explore the hill beyond the river." "Yes!" said Ellie. "And if we meet a stream, I will carry you. And if we meet tall grass, you will scout for me." They both laughed, happy and ready for anything. 14
That night, Milo curled up in his sandy burrow, warm and safe. He thought about his big friend with the red scarf and the gentle smile. Ellie, under the stars, thought about her tiny friend with the green satchel and the bright amber eyes. Both fell asleep smiling, knowing that tomorrow would bring new adventures for the elephant and the meerkat.
