The Girl and the Dragon Egg Jane MEADOW

Lily loved to explore the woods near her village. One misty morning, she pulled on her mustard-yellow raincoat and green rubber boots. She packed her red satchel with snacks and a small knitted scarf. Deep in the woods, she heard a strange, soft humming sound. It seemed to come from behind a fallen log. 1

Lily peeked behind the log and gasped. There, in a nest of dry grass, lay a beautiful egg. It was the size of a melon, with swirls of turquoise and gold. A faint warm glow pulsed from inside, like a tiny heartbeat. Lily knew at once it was a dragon egg, and it was all alone. 2

Lily gently lifted the egg and wrapped it in her scarf. It felt warm and precious in her arms. She knew she had to protect it, but she didn't know how. Just then, she heard footsteps on the path. An old man with a white beard and a moss-green coat appeared, leaning on a wooden staff carved like a dragon. 3

"Hello, little one," said the man kindly. "I am Master Orin, a dragon keeper. I see you have found something very special." Lily showed him the egg. "It must have rolled away from its nest," he said. "The dragon family is probably searching for it. Will you help me keep it safe?" Lily nodded bravely. 4

Master Orin led Lily to a cozy cave nearby. He showed her how to make a proper nest from straw and soft leaves. "The egg must stay warm," he explained. "And it needs to be fed a special milk made from herbs and honey." Lily listened carefully. This was a big responsibility, but she was ready to do her best. 5

Every day, Lily came to the cave. She fed the egg warm milk from a small clay bowl. She wrapped it in her scarf and sang soft songs to it. The egg's glow grew brighter, and Lily felt proud. Master Orin watched and smiled. "You are a natural keeper," he said. Lily's heart swelled with happiness. 6

But one night, a cold wind blew through the cave. The egg's glow flickered and dimmed. Lily was worried. She held the egg close and wrapped it in extra blankets. She stayed by its side all night, keeping it warm with her own body. By morning, the glow returned, and Lily sighed with relief. 7

Days turned into weeks. Lily never gave up. She carried the egg in her satchel wherever she went, always keeping it close. Her friends asked why she was so busy, but she simply said she had something important to protect. The egg became her secret treasure, and she loved it more each day. 8

One afternoon, Master Orin looked at the sky and smiled. "The dragon family is near," he said. "I can feel it in the wind." Lily's heart raced. She had grown to love the egg, but she knew it belonged with its family. She held it tight and whispered, "Don't worry, little one. Your family is coming." 9

That evening, a shadow passed over the cave. Lily looked up and saw a huge dragon with emerald scales and golden eyes. It was the mother dragon! She landed softly, her wide wings folding gently. Lily stepped forward, holding the egg out. "I kept it safe for you," she said, her voice trembling. 10

The mother dragon lowered her long neck and gently took the egg. She hummed a deep, happy sound that made the cave vibrate. Then she looked at Lily with grateful eyes. "Thank you, little keeper," she rumbled. "You have taken good care of my child." Lily's eyes filled with happy tears. 11

Master Orin placed a hand on Lily's shoulder. "You see," he said, "protecting others takes love and hard work. You did a wonderful job." Lily smiled, feeling proud. She had learned that being responsible was not always easy, but it was always worth it. The mother dragon nuzzled her gently, and Lily laughed. 12

The mother dragon curled around her egg and let out a soft, warm breath. The egg began to crack, and a tiny dragon poked its head out. It had shiny turquoise scales and bright golden eyes. Lily clapped her hands with joy. "Hello, little one," she whispered. The baby dragon blinked at her and chirped happily. 13

Master Orin gave Lily a small wooden dragon carved by his own hands. "Remember," he said, "you are a keeper now. You have shown courage and kindness." Lily hugged him tightly. She knew she would never forget the egg or the lessons she had learned. Taking care of someone else was a big responsibility, and she had done her best every day. 14

The dragon family flew away into the sunset, their wings shining in the golden light. Lily waved until they were tiny dots in the sky. She felt a warm glow in her heart, just like the egg's glow. She had protected it, and now it was safe with its family. That was the best feeling in the world. 15

Back at home, Lily placed the wooden dragon on her shelf. She looked out of her window at the stars and smiled. She had learned that caring for others requires love and hard work, and she was proud of what she did. Every day, she remembered the egg and the joy of being a keeper. And she knew she would always help those in need.
