🎧 Listen to the Story · 6:16

In the warm Australian bush, where gum trees grow tall and skinny, lives a koala named Kiki who loves the quiet heights of her favorite branch. Down below, a young kangaroo named Joey practices his biggest hops across the open ground. The two are the best of friends, and every morning they laugh at their differences before meeting at the bottom of the gum tree for a friendly hello. One sunny day Joey brings exciting news of a new pathway through the bush, and the pair sets off together on an adventure.

When a storm has knocked down branches and piled up logs and rocks, the pathway is blocked. Joey cannot jump the pile, and Kiki cannot climb through the tangled branches. Then Kiki proposes a plan: she climbs high to spot a new route from above, while Joey uses his springy legs to lead the way over logs and rocks. Step by step, the friends help each other past each obstacle and find a safe path around the blockage, ending at a lovely clearing with a sparkling creek.

The story shows young readers how different abilities can fit together when friends cooperate. Kiki's careful climbing and Joey's brave jumping make a perfect team, and the tale gently teaches that being different is a strength rather than a weakness. Written by Jane Meadow, this picture-book tale set in the Australian bush is suited to young children and to parents or teachers looking for a warm story about teamwork, trust and looking out for one another.

A Chapter from the Book

The Koala and the Kangaroo Jane MEADOW

In the warm Australian bush, where gum trees grew tall and skinny, lived a koala named Kiki. Kiki loved staying high up in the branches, where the leaves were fresh and the breeze was soft. She had fluffy grey fur, a big round black nose, and a green leaf tucked behind one ear. From her treetop, Kiki could see the whole bush. 1

Down below, a young kangaroo named Joey loved to hop across the open ground. He had sandy brown fur, a cream belly, and a little red neckerchief tied at his throat. Joey's long hind legs and thick tail made him springy and fast. He could jump over logs and rocks without even slowing down. Joey and Kiki were the best of friends. 2

Every morning, Kiki climbed to her favorite branch while Joey practiced his biggest hops. 'Come down and hop with me, Kiki!' Joey called. But Kiki liked the quiet heights. 'Come up and see the view, Joey!' she replied. They laughed at their differences, but they always met at the bottom of the gum tree for a friendly hello. 3

One sunny day, Joey hopped over to Kiki's tree with exciting news. 'There's a new pathway through the bush!' he said. 'Let's go on an adventure and see where it leads.' Kiki climbed down slowly, her little claws gripping the bark. She was cautious, but she trusted her friend. 'All right,' she said. 'But stay close.' 4

The two friends set off along the pathway. Joey hopped ahead, his tail bouncing behind him, while Kiki padded softly on the ground. The bush was full of sounds: kookaburras laughing, cicadas buzzing, and leaves rustling in the wind. It was a perfect day for an adventure. They felt brave and happy together. 5

Soon they came to a place where the pathway was blocked. A big storm had knocked down branches and piled up logs and rocks. Joey tried to jump over, but the pile was too high and too wide. Kiki tried to climb through, but the branches were tangled. 'Oh no,' said Joey. 'How will we get past?' 6

Kiki looked up at the tall gum trees. 'I have an idea,' she said. 'I can climb high and spot a new route from above.' Joey nodded. 'And I can jump over logs and rocks to lead the way!' So Kiki scrambled up the nearest tree, her strong claws gripping the bark. Up and up she went, until she could see far across the bush. 7

From her high branch, Kiki looked carefully. She saw a winding path that curved around the blocked trail. It went past a fallen log, over a small rocky hill, and through a patch of soft ferns. 'I see a way!' she called down to Joey. 'Follow me!' Joey waited below, his ears standing up, ready to move. 8

Kiki climbed down and pointed with her paw. 'There's a log ahead. Can you jump it?' Joey grinned. 'Easy!' He hopped over the log in one smooth jump. Then he turned and waited for Kiki. She climbed over the log slowly and carefully. 'You did it!' said Joey. They both laughed and continued on their way. 9

Next came a rocky hill. Joey bounded up and over the rocks with strong, springy jumps. Kiki followed, using her little claws to grip the stones. At the top, they stopped to catch their breath. 'You're a great climber,' said Joey. 'And you're a great jumper,' said Kiki. They smiled at each other, proud of their teamwork. 10

They reached the patch of soft ferns. It was cool and green, and the ground was spongy under their feet. Kiki spotted a narrow gap between two bushes. 'We can squeeze through there,' she said. Joey went first, pushing the bushes aside with his nose. Kiki followed close behind. On the other side, the pathway opened up again. 11

They had found a safe path around the blockage! Joey hopped with joy, and Kiki clapped her paws. 'We did it together!' they cheered. They continued along the new route, which led them to a lovely clearing with a small, sparkling creek. It was even better than the original pathway. They sat by the water and shared a snack of fresh leaves. 12

From that day on, Kiki and Joey knew that friends can help each other overcome limitations. Kiki's careful climbing and Joey's brave jumping made a perfect team. They went on many more adventures, always looking out for each other. And whenever a path was blocked, they knew they could find a way together. 13

Back at the gum tree, Kiki climbed up to her favorite branch while Joey practiced his hops below. 'Thank you for spotting the way,' Joey called up. 'Thank you for jumping ahead,' Kiki called down. They had learned that being different was a strength, not a weakness. The bush was full of possibilities when they worked as a team. 14

That evening, as the sun set over the Australian bush, Kiki and Joey sat together on a low branch. 'Friendship is the best adventure,' said Kiki. Joey nodded, his red neckerchief glowing in the fading light. 'And teamwork makes us unstoppable,' he added. They watched the stars appear, happy and safe in their beautiful bush home. 15

So, if you ever find your path blocked, remember Kiki and Joey. One friend can climb high to see the way, and another can jump over obstacles to lead. With kindness, courage, and teamwork, there's no problem too big. And that's the story of the koala and the kangaroo, best friends forever in the Australian bush.
