The Lion and the Mouse

The Lion and the Mouse

🎧 Listen to the Story · 6:32

On a warm savanna morning, Leo the lion sits on a smooth rock and proudly declares that only big animals can do big things. He lives in a cozy den beneath a large acacia tree with Lina the lioness and their two playful cubs, and he believes his strength is all his family needs. Nearby, a tiny mouse named Pip, wearing a little red neckerchief, watches and smiles, even after Leo tells Pip that a mouse is too small to be helpful.

When a loud crack echoes across the savanna and a fallen tree blocks the entrance to the den with the cubs trapped inside, the strongest animals try and fail to move it. The giraffe, the elephant and the rhino all push, but the tree will not budge. It is Pip who notices a narrow gap beneath the trunk and proposes a plan in which big animals push from outside while the small mouse guides the cubs from within.

The story follows this rescue step by step, showing how strength and cleverness work best together. Young readers learn that courage, quick thinking and teamwork can matter more than size, and that judging others by their size means missing what they can offer. The gentle savanna setting, the worried family and the cheering animals make it a warm read-aloud tale about friendship and respect for children in the early years of school.

A Chapter from the Book

The Lion and the Mouse Jane MEADOW

On a warm savanna morning, Leo the lion sat on a smooth rock and watched the grass sway. He was large and golden, with a thick brown mane that waved in the breeze. A green grass armband circled his strong leg. 'I am the biggest and strongest,' he said proudly. 'Only big animals can do big things.' 1

Nearby, a tiny mouse named Pip peeked from a hole. Pip wore a little red neckerchief and had soft grey fur and bright dark eyes. Pip was curious and brave. 'Good morning, Leo!' Pip squeaked. Leo looked down and chuckled. 'You are too small to be helpful,' he said. Pip just smiled and twitched his whiskers. 2

Leo's family lived in a cozy den under a big acacia tree. Lina the lioness, with her gentle hazel eyes and blue bead necklace, rested nearby. Two fluffy cubs with faint spots tumbled and played. 'Stay close,' Lina said softly. Leo puffed out his chest. 'I will protect everyone,' he declared. 'That is a big job for big animals.' 3

Suddenly, a loud CRACK echoed across the savanna. A huge tree fell and blocked the entrance to the den! Dust swirled in the air. The cubs squeaked with fright. Lina hurried to Leo. 'The cubs are inside!' she cried. Leo pushed and pushed, but the heavy tree would not move. 'I am strong, but this is too big,' he groaned. 4

All the animals gathered around. The tall giraffe tried to lift the tree with her long neck. The strong elephant pushed with his powerful trunk. The sturdy rhino shoved with his horn. But the tree would not budge. Everyone was worried. Leo paced back and forth. 'Only big animals can help,' he muttered, 'and even we cannot do this.' 5

Little Pip scampered closer. 'Let me look,' Pip squeaked. Leo frowned. 'You are too small,' he said. But Lina gently nudged him. 'Let Pip try,' she said wisely. 'Sometimes small eyes see things big eyes miss.' Pip nodded bravely and scurried around the fallen tree, sniffing and peeking. The other animals watched quietly. 6

Pip discovered a narrow gap between the tree and the rocky ground. It was just wide enough for a tiny mouse. Pip squeezed through and found the cubs huddled inside the den. 'Follow me!' Pip called cheerfully. 'There is a way out!' But the cubs were scared. 'We are too big,' they whimpered. 'We cannot fit through that tiny space.' 7

Pip went back to Leo. 'The gap is small, but the cubs can make it if we widen it a little,' Pip explained. 'We need teamwork. Big animals can push from the outside, and I will guide the cubs from the inside.' Leo looked at Pip with surprise. 'You have a plan?' he asked. Pip nodded. 'Cleverness and courage can solve big problems.' 8

Leo called everyone together. 'We will work as a team!' he roared. The elephant and rhino pushed the tree just a little. The giraffe used her strong neck to hold it steady. Leo dug at the dirt with his big paws, making the gap a bit wider. Pip dashed inside to lead the cubs. Everyone worked together, big and small. 9

Inside, Pip spoke softly to the cubs. 'One step at a time. I will go first.' The cubs followed Pip's tiny tail through the narrow passage. Outside, Leo called, 'We are here! You can do it!' The first cub squeezed through. Then the second. Lina nuzzled them close. Everyone cheered. 'Pip did it!' they cried. 10

Leo looked at Pip with new eyes. 'You are small, but you are the bravest and cleverest friend I know,' he said. Pip's whiskers twitched happily. 'Everyone has valuable abilities,' Pip said. 'Big animals have strength, and small animals have cleverness and courage.' Leo nodded. 'I was wrong to think only big animals can help.' 11

Lina smiled, her blue bead necklace shining in the sun. 'Friendship and teamwork make us strong,' she said. 'No matter how small or big we are.' The cubs danced around Pip. 'Thank you, Pip!' they squeaked. Leo placed his big paw gently next to Pip's tiny one. 'From now on, we are best friends,' he declared. The savanna echoed with happy sounds. 12

That evening, the animals gathered for a celebration. Pip stood proudly beside Leo, the red neckerchief bright against grey fur. 'To Pip!' Leo roared. 'The little mouse with a big heart!' Everyone cheered. The cubs brought berries and nuts. Lina shared sweet grass. They all agreed that Pip's cleverness and courage had saved the day. 13

Leo learned a special lesson. 'I thought only big animals could do big things,' he said. 'But Pip showed me that cleverness, courage, and friendship matter more than size.' Pip climbed onto Leo's paw and bowed. 'And Leo showed me that big animals can be kind and listen to small friends,' Pip replied. They smiled at each other. 14

From that day on, Leo and Pip were best friends. They played together every morning. Pip rode on Leo's back, and Leo showed Pip the best berry bushes. The cubs loved Pip's stories. Lina often said, 'We are strongest when we work together.' And everyone on the savanna agreed. 15

So if you ever think you are too small to help, remember Pip the mouse and Leo the lion. Everyone has valuable abilities. Cleverness, courage, and friendship can solve big problems. And teamwork, no matter how small you are, makes everything possible. The end.
