🎧 Listen to the Story · 6:12

Ellie is a little elephant with soft blue-grey skin and a red polka-dot scarf, and she loves wandering through the sunny meadow near her home. Curious and cheerful, she sometimes feels lonely and wishes she had a friend to share her adventures with. One morning she packs her woven satchel with tasty leaves and a shiny blue stone, her special keepsake, and sets out for a day of exploring.

Past a tall oak tree she meets Pip, a tiny mouse with golden-brown fur and an acorn-cap hat, who is no bigger than a leaf. The two become fast friends and discover that they make a great team: Pip notices tiny flowers and shiny beetles that Ellie would miss, while Ellie can reach the high leaves. Their happy exploring turns to worry, however, when Ellie climbs a pile of slippery rocks, slips, and sends her precious blue stone bouncing into a narrow gap between two big rocks where her trunk cannot reach.

Pip offers to help, and the story follows his brave squeeze into the dark gap to rescue the stone, and the gratitude and friendship that follow. Young readers learn that friendship is not about size but about kindness and courage, and that even the smallest friend can make the biggest difference. The gentle, simple tale suits children who are beginning to read stories on their own or who enjoy being read to at bedtime.

A Chapter from the Book

The Little Elephant's Mouse Jane MEADOW

Ellie was a little elephant with soft blue-grey skin and a red scarf with white polka dots. She loved to wander through the sunny meadow near her home. Her big brown eyes sparkled with curiosity as she explored. But sometimes, Ellie felt a little lonely. She wished she had a friend to share her adventures with. 1

One morning, Ellie packed her woven satchel with tasty leaves and a shiny blue stone she had found. The stone was her special keepsake. It was smooth and cool, and it reminded her of the clear sky. She carried it everywhere she went, tucked safely in her bag. 'Today is a good day for an adventure,' she said to herself. 2

As Ellie strolled past a tall oak tree, she heard a tiny squeak. 'Hello down there!' called a voice. Ellie looked around but saw no one. Then she spotted a little mouse with golden-brown fur and an acorn-cap hat. He was no bigger than a leaf! 'I'm Pip,' he said with a cheerful grin. 'Would you like to play?' 3

Ellie's eyes widened with delight. 'A mouse! I've never met a mouse before,' she said. Pip climbed onto a rock so he could see her better. 'And I've never met an elephant,' he squeaked. 'But I'm not scared of you!' Ellie giggled. 'And I'm not scared of you either,' she said. They decided to explore together. 4

Pip rode on Ellie's shoulder as they wandered through the meadow. He pointed out tiny flowers and shiny beetles that Ellie had never noticed. 'You see things I miss,' Ellie said. 'And you can reach the high leaves,' Pip replied. They made a great team. Ellie felt happy to have a friend, even one so small. 5

They came to a rocky patch where big grey stones were piled up. Ellie thought it would be fun to climb over them. 'Be careful,' Pip warned. 'These rocks look slippery.' But Ellie was already scrambling up. She was a little clumsy, and her satchel swung wildly. 'I'm fine!' she called. But just then, she slipped. 6

Ellie tumbled down and landed with a thud. She wasn't hurt, but her satchel had flown open. Out rolled her precious blue keepsake. It bounced and bounced and then disappeared into a narrow gap between two big rocks. 'Oh no!' Ellie cried. 'My special stone! It's gone!' She peered into the dark gap, but she couldn't see it. 7

Ellie tried to reach the stone with her trunk, but the gap was too narrow. She tried to push the rocks apart, but they wouldn't budge. Tears filled her big brown eyes. 'I'll never get it back,' she sobbed. Pip scampered down from her shoulder. 'Don't cry, Ellie. Maybe I can help,' he said. 8

Pip looked at the narrow gap. 'I'm small enough to fit in there,' he said. Ellie sniffed. 'But it's dark and scary. Are you sure?' Pip nodded bravely. 'You're my friend. I want to help.' He took off his acorn-cap hat and handed it to Ellie. 'Hold this for luck,' he said. Then he squeezed into the gap. 9

Ellie waited anxiously. She could hear Pip's tiny footsteps echoing in the dark. 'Can you see it?' she called. 'Almost there!' Pip squeaked back. The gap was tight, but Pip was quick and clever. He wriggled and squirmed until he reached the shiny blue stone. 'Got it!' he shouted. He pushed the stone back toward the opening. 10

With a final push, the blue stone rolled out of the gap and landed at Ellie's feet. 'You did it!' she cheered. Pip squeezed out, dusty but proud. Ellie gently picked him up and hugged him. 'Thank you, Pip! You're the best friend ever!' She gave him back his acorn-cap hat. 'I couldn't have done it without you,' she said. 11

Ellie tied her scarf around Pip like a tiny blanket. 'You're a hero,' she said. Pip blushed. 'I'm just a mouse,' he said. 'But even a small mouse can be a big help.' Ellie nodded. 'Friendship isn't about size,' she said. 'It's about being there for each other.' They smiled at each other, happy and safe. 12

From that day on, Ellie and Pip were inseparable. They explored the meadow together, sharing secrets and laughter. Ellie kept her blue stone safe in her satchel, but now it reminded her of Pip's bravery. Whenever she looked at it, she smiled. She knew that even the smallest friend could make the biggest difference. 13

Ellie made a tiny pouch for Pip to ride in, so he could always be close. They told everyone they met about their adventure. The other animals were amazed. 'Who would have thought an elephant and a mouse could be friends?' they said. But Ellie and Pip knew that friendship is not determined by size. It's determined by kindness and courage. 14

One sunny afternoon, they sat by the pond. Ellie's big ears flapped gently in the breeze. 'I'm glad I met you, Pip,' she said. 'Me too,' Pip squeaked. 'You're my best friend, even if you are huge.' Ellie laughed. 'And you're mine, even if you are tiny.' They watched the clouds drift by, content and happy. 15

And so, Ellie the little elephant and Pip the mouse proved that a friend in need is a friend indeed. No matter how small you are, you can always help someone you care about. And sometimes, the smallest friends turn out to be the biggest heroes. They lived happily together, always ready for their next adventure.
