The Little Penguin's Promise

🎧 Listen to the Story · 6:17

Percy is a tall, proud penguin with a black back, a white belly and kind amber eyes, living at the edge of the great ice where the sea whispers to the snow. One bright, cold morning he notices a tiny seabird chick named Pip sitting alone on a small ice floe, her soft grey down fluffed in the breeze and her big round dark eyes wide with worry. Pip's family is waiting across the icy channel, but the water looks deep, the wind is strong and the ice feels slippery, and she is too frightened to cross on her own.

Percy waddles over and makes her a simple promise: he will stay right beside her the whole way. Step by step, he leads her across the channel, keeping up a calm, steady voice and turning her fear into small moments of laughter, as when she looks down and sees her own funny reflection in the shiny ice. When a cold gust makes her sit down with a plop and say she is too small, Percy reminds her that small can be strong and that he will not leave her. When her foot slips on a smooth patch, his flipper steadies her, and his quiet words remind her that promises matter.

The story follows the last few steps to the far shore, where Pip's family is calling her name, and shows what happens when courage is borrowed from a friend who keeps his word. It is a gentle tale for young children about trust, kindness and trying again after a wobble, and it offers parents and teachers an easy way to talk about what it means to make a promise and to keep it.

The Little Penguin's Promise Jane MEADOW

On a bright, cold morning at the edge of the great ice, Percy the penguin stood tall and proud. His black back and white belly shone like polished stones, and his amber eyes sparkled with kindness. Percy loved this quiet place where the sea whispered secrets to the snow. Every day he watched the seabirds wheel and dive above the icy water. 1

Not far away, a tiny seabird chick named Pip sat alone on a small ice floe. Her soft grey down fluffed in the breeze, and her big round dark eyes were wide with worry. Pip's family was across the icy channel, but the water looked deep and the ice felt slippery. She let out a tiny, shaky chirp. 2

Percy waddled over with a warm, encouraging smile. 'Hello, little one,' he said gently. 'Why are you all alone?' Pip looked up with her big round dark eyes and whispered, 'My family is over there, but I'm scared to cross.' Percy nodded kindly. 'I can help you,' he said. 'I promise to stay right beside you.' 3

Pip's small stubby wings trembled. 'The wind is so strong,' she peeped. 'What if I slip?' Percy pointed a flipper toward the channel. 'We'll go step by step,' he said. 'I'll be here the whole time. You can trust me.' Pip took a deep breath and looked at the long, icy path ahead. 4

Percy stepped onto the ice first. 'Follow my feet,' he said. 'One step, then another.' Pip hopped nervously behind him, her tiny pale beak chattering. The wind blew a cold gust, and she stopped. 'I can't!' she cried. Percy turned and smiled. 'You can,' he said. 'You're braver than you think. I'm right here.' 5

They moved slowly across the slippery ice. Percy kept talking in a calm, steady voice. 'Look at the shiny ice,' he said. 'It's like a mirror.' Pip looked down and saw her own reflection. She giggled a little. 'My feathers look funny,' she said. Percy laughed too. 'See? You're doing great,' he said. 'Just a few more steps.' 6

But then the wind howled louder, and the ice beneath Pip's feet felt extra slippery. She wobbled and sat down with a plop. 'I'm too small,' she whimpered. 'I'll never make it.' Percy waddled back and stood close. 'You are small,' he said, 'but small can be strong. I promised to stay with you, and I will.' 7

Pip looked at Percy's bright amber eyes and felt a little spark of courage. She stood up and shook her fluffy down. 'Okay,' she said softly. 'I'll try again.' Percy clapped his flippers. 'That's the spirit!' he cheered. They started forward once more, one careful step at a time. The channel didn't seem so wide anymore. 8

As they crossed, Percy told Pip about the seabirds he'd seen flying high and free. 'Your family will be so happy to see you,' he said. Pip imagined her mother's warm wings and felt her heart beat faster with hope. 'I can almost see them,' she said, stretching her neck. The far shore was getting closer now. 9

Suddenly Pip's foot slipped on a smooth patch of ice. She gasped and flapped her tiny wings. Percy reached out a flipper and steadied her. 'I've got you,' he said. 'You're safe.' Pip held on and caught her breath. 'Thank you, Percy,' she whispered. 'You really did stay with me.' Percy smiled. 'P romises are important,' he said. 10

Now the far shore was just a few steps away. Pip could hear her family calling her name. She looked back at Percy. 'I'm scared to go the last bit alone,' she said. Percy nodded. 'I'll be right here watching,' he said. 'You can do this. I believe in you.' Pip took a deep breath and faced the last stretch of ice. 11

Pip stepped forward, one foot then the other. Her heart pounded, but she didn't stop. She remembered Percy's kind words and his brave smile. The wind whistled, but she kept going. Then her feet touched the solid snow of the far shore. She had made it! She let out a happy chirp and looked back at Percy. 12

Pip's family rushed over with warm wings and happy calls. They hugged her tight and asked how she had crossed. Pip pointed across the channel to Percy, who stood watching with a proud smile. 'My friend helped me,' she said. 'He promised to stay with me, and he did.' Her family waved their wings in thanks. 13

Percy waddled across to join them. Pip's family thanked him again and again. 'You kept your promise,' said Pip's mother. 'That means so much.' Percy bowed his head shyly. 'I only did what I said I would,' he said. Pip hugged Percy with her tiny wings. 'You made me brave,' she said. 'I'll never forget.' 14

From that day on, Percy and Pip were the best of friends. They played on the ice and watched the seabirds fly. Percy learned that keeping a promise builds trust, and Pip learned that a true friend helps you find courage. 'Will you promise to visit me?' Pip asked. 'I promise,' said Percy with a smile. 15

And Percy kept that promise too. Whenever Pip felt scared, she remembered Percy's steady voice and kind amber eyes. She knew that with a friend beside her, she could face anything. And Percy knew that a kept promise is a gift that makes friendship grow strong and true. The icy channel was never scary again.
