A Chapter from the Book
The Little Rescue Dog Jane MEADOW
In a sunny mountain town, a little puppy named Scout lived with his handler, Maya. Scout had soft golden-brown fur, a cream chest, and big round eyes. He wore a bright red training vest with a silver badge. Every morning, Scout watched the rescue team go out to help people. "One day, I'll be a search dog too," he barked happily. 1
Maya smiled and patted Scout's floppy ears. "You will, little one," she said. "But first, we have lots of training to do." Scout wagged his short tail. He wanted to learn everything right away. Maya put on her green rescue jacket and blew her orange whistle. "Ready for your first lesson?" she asked. Scout jumped up and down. "Ready!" he yipped. 2
At the training field, Scout met Rufus, a big chocolate-brown dog with grey around his muzzle. Rufus wore a blue working harness. "This is Rufus," Maya said. "He's the best search dog on our team. He'll help you learn." Rufus gave Scout a calm, friendly look. "Follow your nose, little friend," he said. "That's the secret." Scout nodded, eager to try. 3
Maya hid a treat in the grass and asked Scout to find it. Scout sniffed the ground. He ran left, then right. But the scent was tricky. He lost it in the tall weeds. "I can't find it," Scout whined. His ears drooped. Maya knelt beside him. "It's okay," she said. "Every search dog loses the scent sometimes. Try again." Scout sighed and sat down. 4
The next day, Scout practiced again. He sniffed a trail of treats. But a breeze blew the scent away. Scout felt sad. "Maybe I'm too little to be a search dog," he thought. Rufus came over and sat beside him. "I lost lots of scents when I was a puppy," Rufus said. "But I kept practicing. Watch me." Rufus put his nose down and showed Scout how to breathe deeply. 5
Scout watched Rufus closely. He saw how Rufus moved slowly and sniffed in short puffs. "Let the scent come to you," Rufus said. Scout tried it. He sniffed gently. Then he caught a tiny whiff of treat! He followed it step by step. "I found it!" he barked. Maya cheered and blew her whistle. "Great job, Scout!" she said. Scout's tail wagged fast. 6
Every day after that, Scout practiced with Maya and Rufus. He learned to follow scents over rocks, under bushes, and across streams. Sometimes he still lost the trail. But he didn't give up. "Practice makes progress," Maya said. Rufus nodded. "And teamwork makes it fun," he added. Scout felt a little braver each day. His confidence grew, like a small seed growing into a tall tree. 7
One morning, Maya's radio crackled. A hiker had lost a backpack on the mountain trail. "We need to find it," Maya said. "It has important things inside." Scout's ears perked up. This was a real search! He stood tall in his red vest. "I'm ready," he barked. Rufus wagged his tail. "Let's work together," he said. The team set off up the trail. 8
The hiker, a young woman in a yellow rain jacket and round glasses, met them at the trailhead. "I set my red backpack down for just a minute," she said. "When I turned around, it was gone!" She looked worried. Scout sniffed the ground near her feet. He caught a faint scent. "We'll find it," Maya promised. Scout put his nose down and started to search. 9
Scout followed the scent along the path. But then the trail split in two. Scout lost the scent again. He felt a flutter of worry. "What if I can't find it?" he thought. Rufus came beside him. "Remember," Rufus said. "Slow down. Breathe. Let your nose lead." Scout took a deep breath. He sniffed the air. There it was! A tiny thread of scent drifted to the left. 10
Scout followed the scent up a small hill. Maya and Rufus followed behind. The scent grew stronger. Scout's heart beat fast. He scrambled over rocks and around a big pine tree. Then he saw it! The red backpack was tucked under a bush. "Found it!" Scout barked loudly. Maya rushed over and praised him. "You did it, Scout!" she cheered. 11
Rufus gave Scout a friendly nudge. "Great teamwork," he said. The hiker hurried up the hill. "My backpack!" she cried happily. "Thank you, thank you!" She opened it and showed them her water bottle, map, and a special photo. "These are so important to me," she said. Scout felt proud. His tail wagged so hard it was a blur. 12
Maya picked Scout up and hugged him. "You were brave and determined," she said. "And you used your training." Scout licked her cheek. The hiker gave Scout a gentle pat. "You're a hero," she said. Scout's eyes shone. He had never felt so confident. All his practice had paid off. And working with his team made the win even sweeter. 13
That evening, Scout lay in his bed, tired but happy. He thought about the day. He had lost the scent at first, but he didn't give up. Rufus had helped him, and Maya had cheered him on. "Practice and teamwork," Scout whispered to himself. "That's the secret." He closed his big round eyes and fell asleep with a smile.
