A Chapter from the Book
The Mouse and the Hedgehog Jane MEADOW
In a cozy meadow at the edge of the woods, a little grey mouse with big round ears and a red knitted scarf scurried about. Her name was Mia, and she loved to explore. One chilly morning, she noticed the leaves turning gold and the wind blowing cool. Winter was coming! Mia twitched her tiny pink nose and said, 'I need to find a warm place to sleep.' 1
Mia packed her tiny blue satchel with seeds and berries. She set off to find the perfect spot for a winter shelter. Along the way, she met a round hedgehog named Harry. He wore a green woolly hat with a pompom and round wire glasses. 'Hello!' said Mia. 'Are you looking for a winter home too?' Harry nodded. 'Yes, I am,' he said softly. 2
Harry and Mia walked together through the meadow. They found a lovely spot under a big oak tree. 'This would be perfect!' Mia squeaked. 'We could build our shelters right next to each other!' Harry smiled. 'That sounds nice,' he said. 'We can be neighbors and keep each other company.' So they decided to build side by side. 3
Mia gathered twigs and soft moss for her shelter. Harry collected dry leaves and grass for his burrow. They worked hard all day. Mia's tiny paws moved quickly, and her long thin tail swished with excitement. Harry's short stubby legs carried him back and forth. 'Our shelters will be so cozy!' Mia said. Harry adjusted his glasses and agreed. 4
As the days grew shorter, Mia and Harry visited each other's shelters. Mia's had a little door and a soft moss bed. Harry's burrow was snug and round. 'Your home is lovely,' Mia said. 'Yours is too,' Harry replied. They sat together and shared berries from Mia's satchel. The wind blew outside, but inside they felt warm and happy. 5
One afternoon, Mia said, 'Let's tell stories while we work!' Harry nodded. 'I'd like that.' So Mia told a story about a brave mouse who sailed across a puddle. Harry listened carefully, his black button eyes shining. Then Harry told a story about a hedgehog who found a magical acorn. Mia giggled and clapped her tiny paws. Stories made the work go faster. 6
The next day, they added more leaves to their shelters. Mia's red scarf kept her warm as she carried twigs. Harry's green hat kept his ears cozy. 'I'm so glad we're building together,' Mia said. 'Me too,' said Harry. 'It's nice to have a friend nearby.' They worked side by side, and the shelters grew stronger and warmer. 7
Sometimes they took breaks and played. They played hide-andseek among the fallen leaves. Mia's big ears helped her hear Harry's footsteps. Harry's round body rolled gently over the grass. They laughed and chased each other. 'You're good at hiding!' Harry said. 'And you're good at seeking!' Mia replied. Their friendship grew with each game. 8
As winter got closer, the air turned colder. Mia and Harry made sure their shelters were ready. Mia stuffed moss into every crack. Harry piled leaves high around his burrow. 'Do you think it will snow soon?' Mia asked. 'I think so,' Harry said. 'But we are prepared.' They looked at their cozy homes and felt proud of their hard work. 9
One evening, they sat outside together. The sky was pink and orange. 'I have a story about the first snowflake,' Mia said. Harry leaned close. 'Once, a little snowflake was afraid to fall. But then it saw all the other snowflakes, and it knew it wasn't alone.' Harry smiled. 'That's a lovely story,' he said. 'It reminds me of us.' 10
The next morning, Mia woke up to a white world. Snow had fallen during the night! She peeked out of her shelter. Harry was already outside, brushing snow off his green hat. 'Harry!' Mia called. 'The snow is here!' Harry looked up and waved. 'Come see!' he said. Mia scampered over, her red scarf flapping. 'Our shelters are right next to each other,' she said happily. 11
Mia and Harry checked their shelters. They were dry and warm inside. 'We did a good job,' Harry said. Mia nodded. 'We sure did.' They decided to celebrate with a story. They sat in Harry's burrow, sharing a berry. Harry told a story about a friendly bear who shared his honey. Mia listened, feeling warm and safe. The snow fell softly outside. 12
That night, the wind howled, but Mia and Harry were not afraid. They knew they had each other. Mia called over, 'Harry, are you warm?' Harry's voice came back, 'Yes, I am. Are you?' 'Yes!' Mia said. They smiled in the dark. Their friendship made the cold seem less scary. They fell asleep listening to the wind, knowing they were not alone. 13
All winter long, Mia and Harry visited each other. They shared stories and seeds. They played in the snow and drank hot berry tea. 'Winter is fun with you,' Mia said. Harry agreed. 'Friends make everything better.' They learned that even when it's cold and dark, a good friend brings warmth and joy. Their hearts were full of happiness. 14
As winter slowly turned to spring, Mia and Harry knew they would always be friends. They had built more than shelters— they had built a friendship. 'Thank you for being my neighbor,' Mia said. Harry smiled. 'Thank you for being my friend.' They promised to share stories all year round. And they knew that no matter the season, they would never be lonely.
