A Chapter from the Book
The Mouse and the Mole Jane MEADOW
Minnie the mouse lived in a cozy burrow under a big oak tree. Her fur was soft and warm grey, and her belly was creamy white. She wore a little red scarf and carried a tiny brown satchel. Every morning, she scurried through the underground tunnels, looking for seeds and shiny pebbles. The underground world was her favorite place to explore. 1
Not far away lived Morris the mole. He had velvety dark brown fur and a pale pink snout. His big shovel-like paws were perfect for digging. He wore small round blue spectacles and a yellow hard hat. Morris liked to dig deep tunnels and collect smooth stones. He was gentle and careful, and he hummed while he worked. 2
One day, Minnie's quick paws scratched at a spot where the dirt felt soft. She sniffed and wiggled her whiskers. Suddenly, a little clump of soil fell away, and a draft of cool air puffed into her face. 'Ooh!' she squeaked. 'What's behind this wall?' She dug a little faster, her heart going pitter-pat. 3
On the other side, Morris was digging too. His strong claws scraped away dirt, and he hummed a low, rumbly tune. Then his paw broke through into a dark, empty space. He blinked his tiny eyes behind his spectacles. 'Hello?' he called softly. 'Is anyone there?' His voice echoed in the darkness. 4
Minnie heard a sound. She froze, her tail curled tight. Then she saw a little pink nose poking through the hole. 'Hello,' said a gentle voice. 'I'm Morris. I'm a mole.' Minnie's whiskers twitched. 'I'm Minnie,' she said. 'I'm a mouse.' They stared at each other through the gap. Then Morris smiled, and Minnie felt brave. 5
Morris widened the hole with his big paws. Soon it was big enough for Minnie to squeeze through. She scurried into a long, forgotten tunnel. It was dark and dusty, and it stretched far into the shadows. Minnie's big brown eyes grew wide. 'It's a tunnel!' she whispered. 'A secret tunnel!' Morris nodded. 'It must have been here for a long time.' 6
The tunnel felt strange and a little scary. It was quiet and cold, and the walls seemed to close in. Minnie's tail trembled. Morris clutched his hard hat. 'Maybe we should go back,' he said. But Minnie took a deep breath. 'We can explore together,' she said. 'I'll go first, and you can dig if we need more room.' 7
Minnie scurried ahead, her little paws tapping on the dirt. She sniffed the air and checked for safe paths. 'This way looks clear!' she called. Morris followed, his big paws ready. Whenever he found loose dirt, he dug it away. 'I'll make it wider,' he said. Bit by bit, the tunnel grew bigger and safer. 8
They worked as a team. Minnie found smooth stones and shiny pebbles to mark the way. Morris dug a little shelf into the wall. 'For your satchel,' he said. Minnie giggled and hung her bag there. They found a cozy corner where the dirt was soft and dry. 'This could be our meeting place,' said Minnie. Morris's small eyes twinkled. 9
Morris dug a small fireplace shape into the wall, and Minnie gathered tiny twigs for a pretend fire. They placed round stones around it like a circle of chairs. Minnie found a flat rock for a table. 'It's starting to feel like home,' she said. Morris nodded. 'A secret home for friends,' he said, and his snout twitched happily. 10
But then a pile of loose dirt tumbled down and blocked the way. Minnie squeaked in surprise. 'Oh no!' she cried. 'We can't get through!' Morris looked at the pile. 'Don't worry,' he said. 'I'm a mole. I can dig.' He started to scoop the dirt with his big paws, but it was a lot. 'I'll help!' said Minnie. 'I can carry small stones.' 11
They worked together. Morris dug and pushed the heavy dirt. Minnie carried away the little stones and pebbles. 'You're doing great!' she cheered. 'So are you!' said Morris. Slowly, the pile grew smaller. Then, with one last push, the passage was clear. 'We did it!' they shouted. They laughed and hugged in the dark tunnel. 12
Now the tunnel was safe and cozy. They added more stones and made a little sign that said 'Friends' in paw prints. Minnie hung her red scarf on a peg. Morris put his hard hat on a shelf. 'This is the best tunnel ever,' said Minnie. 'Because we made it together,' said Morris. They sat by their pretend fire and shared a snack of seeds and roots. 13
From that day on, the tunnel was their special place. They met there every afternoon. Minnie told stories of her adventures above ground. Morris showed off the shiny stones he found. They played hide-and-seek and told jokes. The tunnel echoed with happy squeaks and rumbly laughs. It was the happiest spot underground. 14
Other animals heard about the cozy tunnel. A beetle stopped by, and a friendly worm waved hello. Minnie and Morris welcomed everyone. 'Come in!' they said. 'There's room for all.' They showed how teamwork had turned a dark, scary place into a warm, safe home. 'When friends help each other,' said Minnie, 'even strange things become fun.' 15
And so, the mouse and the mole stayed the best of friends. Their tunnel glowed with kindness and laughter. Minnie's quick paws and Morris's strong digging made a perfect pair. They proved that working together can turn any challenge into an adventure. And if you ever visit the big oak tree, listen closely—you might hear them giggling underground.
