🎧 Listen to the Story · 7:00

Down by a wide, winding river, a young brown otter lives in a cozy burrow beneath the roots of a willow tree, spending his days splashing and diving in the clear water. One bright morning he meets a kingfisher whose blue wings and sunset-orange chest flash over the river, and the two quickly become friends. Each admires what the other can do: the kingfisher flies high and sees far, while the otter swims deep and explores below. Together they decide to travel the river as a team, with the bird scouting the safe route from above and the otter paddling ahead beneath the surface.

The journey takes them past tall reeds and darting fish, through a narrow stretch where rocks break the water and the current grows strong, and finally toward a waterfall the ducks have told them about. When the way looks tricky, the kingfisher flies higher to find a calm channel and calls out directions, and the otter follows her voice and trusts her guidance. Neither could reach these places alone, and the story shows how their different skills fit together.

The book is a gentle tale for young readers about friendship, trust and teamwork, showing that people who are good at different things can accomplish more together than either could alone. Its simple language, repeated refrains and vivid river setting make it well suited to being read aloud or read alone by children beginning to enjoy longer stories.

A Chapter from the Book

The Otter and the Kingfisher Jane MEADOW

Down by the wide, winding river, a young otter lived in a cozy burrow under the roots of a willow tree. His fur was warm brown, and his belly was soft cream. He loved to splash and dive in the clear water. Every morning, he woke to the sound of the river singing. 'What a beautiful day!' he chirped, whiskers twitching. 1

One bright morning, a flash of blue and orange zipped over the water. It was a kingfisher! She landed on a branch above the otter. Her back and wings shone brilliant blue, and her chest was as orange as a sunset. 'Hello!' she called. 'I'm Kingfisher. I've been watching you swim. You're very quick!' The otter smiled. 'And you're very fast!' 2

The otter and the kingfisher became fast friends. 'I can fly high and see far,' said the kingfisher. 'I can swim deep and explore,' said the otter. They decided to travel the river together. The kingfisher would spot the safe route from above, and the otter would swim ahead below. 'Let's go on an adventure!' said the otter, splashing his tail. 3

The river rushed past, sparkling in the sun. The kingfisher flew high, her sharp eyes scanning the water. 'Follow me!' she called. 'There's a smooth path ahead.' The otter dove in, his webbed paws paddling quickly. He loved the feel of the cool water. 'This is fun!' he shouted. 'You're a great guide!' The kingfisher chirped happily. 'And you're a great swimmer!' 4

They passed tall reeds where little fish darted. The kingfisher swooped low. 'Watch out for that fallen log,' she warned. The otter dodged just in time. 'Thanks!' he said. 'You see everything.' The kingfisher puffed out her orange chest. 'I have to. It's my job to keep us safe.' She flew up again, her blue wings shining like jewels. The otter felt lucky to have such a friend. 5

Soon, the river became narrower. Rocks poked out of the water. The current was stronger. The otter slowed down. 'I can't see a clear way,' he said. 'It looks tricky.' The kingfisher flew higher. 'Don't worry,' she said. 'I'll find a safe route. Just follow my call.' She zipped between the rocks, showing the way. 'Left here! Right there!' The otter trusted her. 6

The kingfisher flew over a rocky bend and called, 'The path is narrow here! Follow my voice!' The otter swam carefully, his whiskers twitching. He could hear the water rushing. 'I'm right behind you,' he said. The kingfisher led him through a gap in the rocks. 'You did it!' she cheered. 'We make a great team.' The otter grinned. 'We do! Different skills, but together we're strong.' 7

The river grew calm again, and they rested on a smooth stone. The kingfisher preened her bright feathers. 'You were brave back there,' she said. 'I just followed you,' said the otter. 'And you followed the route I showed,' she replied. 'That's teamwork.' They watched the sun sparkle on the water. 'I'm glad we met,' said the otter. 'Me too,' said the kingfisher. 8

The next day, they set off again. The kingfisher spotted a family of ducks ahead. 'Let's say hello,' she said. They swam over. The ducks quacked a greeting. 'Have you seen the waterfall?' asked the mother duck. 'It's beautiful but tricky.' The otter looked at the kingfisher. 'We can handle it,' he said. The kingfisher nodded. 'Together, we can.' 9

As they neared the waterfall, the river sped up. The otter felt a little nervous. 'I've never been this far,' he admitted. The kingfisher flew up high. 'I can see a safe path around the rocks,' she said. 'Just follow me.' She flew down and hovered over a calm channel. 'This way!' The otter took a deep breath and swam after her. 10

The water churned and swirled, but the kingfisher guided the otter through. 'Left! Now right!' she called. The otter's strong tail pushed him forward. He trusted his friend completely. Finally, they reached a quiet pool behind the waterfall. 'We made it!' the otter shouted. The kingfisher landed on a fern. 'You were amazing!' she said. 'We both were,' said the otter, shaking water from his fur. 11

They sat together behind the waterfall, watching the water dance. 'You know,' said the otter, 'I couldn't have found this place without you.' The kingfisher tilted her head. 'And I couldn't have explored it without you,' she said. 'Your swimming lets us go where I can only fly over.' The otter nodded. 'And your flying lets us see what I can only swim under.' They smiled at each other. 12

From that day on, they were always together. The kingfisher would fly high and call out the safe path, and the otter would swim ahead, ready for anything. They explored every bend of the river. Sometimes they raced, sometimes they rested on warm stones. The river became their home, and their friendship grew stronger with each passing day. 13

Other animals noticed their teamwork. 'How do you always find the best routes?' asked a young rabbit. The otter explained, 'Kingfisher sees from above, and I swim below. We help each other.' The kingfisher added, 'Different skills make a great team.' The rabbit smiled. 'I'll remember that,' she said. The otter and kingfisher felt proud to share their secret. 14
