The Panda and the Monkey

🎧 Listen to the Story · 6:53

In a green forest where bamboo grows tall and soft, Bao the panda lives a quiet life among the groves, munching leaves and listening to the wind. He is calm and patient, carrying a tiny woven bamboo basket for snacks and a small green leaf tucked behind his ear. Not far away lives Milo the monkey, curious and playful, who swings through the high branches with his long curling tail and a little red scarf around his neck. One sunny morning the two meet, and Bao offers to share his bamboo shoots.

Milo suggests they go on an adventure together: he will climb high to spot the best bamboo, and Bao will lead the way through the groves. Their walk shows young readers how friendship works when two very different characters cooperate. Milo learns to slow down and wait, while Bao accepts help crossing a wobbly log over a stream. Along the way Bao teaches Milo to stop and listen to the leaves whispering, and Milo shows Bao how much can be seen from the top of a tall tree.

The story is a gentle tale for young children about patience, sharing, and making room for each other's favorite things. Its simple forest setting and two warm-hearted characters make it well suited to reading aloud at bedtime or in the classroom, where its message about taking turns and helping a friend can be talked about together.

A Chapter from the Book

The Panda and the Monkey Jane MEADOW

In a green forest, where bamboo grew tall and soft, lived Bao the panda. Bao loved quiet places. He spent his days in the bamboo groves, munching leaves and listening to the wind. A small green leaf was tucked behind his ear, and he carried a tiny woven bamboo basket for snacks. Bao was calm and patient, and he liked the peaceful hush of the groves. 1

Not far away, in the same forest, lived Milo the monkey. Milo loved to climb high trees. He would swing from branch to branch, his long curling tail helping him balance. With his big bright amber eyes and a little red scarf around his neck, Milo was always curious and playful. He chattered and laughed as he leaped through the leaves. 2

One sunny morning, Bao was walking slowly through the bamboo, his basket swinging gently. Milo was climbing a tall tree nearby and spotted Bao below. 'Hello down there!' called Milo, hanging by his tail. Bao looked up and smiled. 'Hello up there!' he said softly. 'Would you like to share some bamboo snacks?' Milo swung down to meet him. 3

Milo landed softly next to Bao. 'Your bamboo looks tasty,' he said, his amber eyes shining. Bao opened his basket and shared some tender bamboo shoots. They sat together, munching happily. Milo said, 'I love climbing high trees. From the top, I can see the whole forest!' Bao nodded. 'I love quiet bamboo groves,' he said. 'They make me feel calm.' 4

Milo had an idea. 'Let's go on an adventure!' he said, jumping up. 'I can climb to find the best bamboo, and you can lead the way through the groves. We can share the fun!' Bao smiled. 'That sounds nice,' he said. 'But I walk slowly.' Milo grinned. 'That's okay. I can slow down too. Let's go!' 5

They started their adventure. Bao led the way through a winding path in the bamboo. Milo climbed a tall tree to look around. 'The best bamboo is over there!' he called, pointing to a sunny clearing. Bao nodded and walked toward it. Milo swung down and walked beside Bao, trying not to go too fast. 'This is nice,' Milo said, looking around. 6

As they walked, Bao showed Milo how to listen to the bamboo. 'Shhh,' said Bao. 'Do you hear the leaves whispering?' Milo stopped and listened. 'I do!' he said, his big eyes wide. 'It's like a soft song.' Bao smiled. 'That's why I love the groves,' he said. Milo felt peaceful. He liked this quiet moment with his new friend. 7

Milo spotted a tall tree with a perfect view. 'I'll climb up and find the best bamboo grove!' he said. He scampered up the trunk, his long tail curling around a branch. From the top, he looked out over the forest. 'I see a wonderful grove by a little stream!' he called down. 'Let's go there!' Bao waved his paw. 'Lead the way!' he said. 8

They followed Milo's directions. Bao walked steadily, his basket bouncing gently. Milo climbed from tree to tree to keep watch. Sometimes Milo got too far ahead, and Bao would call, 'Wait for me!' Milo would swing back, laughing. 'Sorry, Bao! I'll go slower,' he said. They made a good team, helping each other along the trail. 9

On the path, they came to a log that had fallen across a small stream. Bao looked at the log. 'It's a bit wobbly for me,' he said. Milo had an idea. He climbed onto a branch and held it steady. 'I'll hold this branch for you,' he said. 'You can cross on the log.' Bao stepped carefully, holding the branch. 'Thank you, Milo,' he said. 'You're a good friend.' 10

At last, they reached the grove by the stream. It was full of tender bamboo. 'You found the best spot!' Bao said happily. They sat down to rest. Bao opened his basket and shared the last of his bamboo snacks. 'These are delicious,' Milo said. 'Sharing makes them taste even better,' Bao said. They munched and watched the stream flow by. 11

Milo looked up at a tall tree beside the stream. 'I'd love to climb that tree,' he said. 'But I don't want to leave you alone.' Bao smiled. 'Go ahead,' he said. 'I'll enjoy the quiet and the bamboo.' So Milo climbed high while Bao rested. When Milo came down, he said, 'That was fun! But I also liked the quiet time with you.' Bao nodded. 'We can do both,' he said. 12

From that day on, Bao and Milo shared many adventures. Milo would climb to find new bamboo groves, and Bao would lead the way through the quiet forest. They learned to take turns and to enjoy each other's favorite things. Milo learned to slow down and listen to the bamboo. Bao learned to look up and see the world from high places. Their friendship grew strong. 13

They often sat together in the bamboo, sharing snacks and stories. 'Friendship is like bamboo,' Bao said. 'It grows strong when we share and care.' Milo nodded. 'And it's more fun when we try new things together,' he said. They smiled at each other, happy to be friends. The forest was full of adventures, and they were ready for more. 14

And so, the panda and the monkey became the best of friends. They showed that friendship encourages compromise. When we share our favorite things and try what our friends love, we grow closer. Bao and Milo's adventure continues, one bamboo grove and one tall tree at a time.
