The Parrot and the Tortoise

🎧 Listen to the Story · 6:27

In a bright green forest, Percy the parrot loves to chatter, flap his wings and fill the air with noise, while his friend Theo the tortoise prefers to take his time and notice small things. When Percy hears about a hidden waterfall deep in the forest, the two set off together, with Percy flying ahead and Theo plodding steadily along at his own pace. Along the way Percy learns to slow down enough to see a rainbow beetle, fish hiding under a rock and a frog on a lily pad, while Theo listens patiently to tales of the faraway places Percy has visited.

When they finally reach the sparkling waterfall, Percy splashes and loops with joy, but then notices Theo sitting quietly on a rock, simply watching and listening. Sitting still beside his friend, Percy discovers that the music of the water and the cool mist can be just as exciting as noise, and that Theo's careful eye reveals a secret world of tiny frogs he would otherwise have missed. Working as a team, the parrot calls out what he sees from above while the tortoise points out the small wonders below.

The story is a gentle tale for young readers about friendship and different ways of experiencing the world. It shows that quiet things can be exciting and that a noisy friend can make an adventure fun, without either character having to change who they are. Parents and teachers looking for a calm bedtime story about patience, curiosity and listening to others will find it here.

A Chapter from the Book

The Parrot and the Tortoise Jane MEADOW

In a bright green forest, where sunshine danced through the leaves, lived a parrot named Percy. Percy had emerald-green feathers, a scarlet chest, and a golden beak that was always open. He loved to chatter and flap and fill the air with noise. 'What a wonderful day!' he squawked. 'Let's find something exciting to do!' 1

Not far away, under a shady fern, lived a tortoise named Theo. Theo had a warm brown and olive-green shell and wore a small moss-green cap tied under his chin. He liked to take his time and notice small things. 'Good morning, Percy,' he said with a slow smile. 'The dew on this spiderweb looks like tiny jewels.' 2

Percy zoomed down from his branch. 'Theo! I heard about a hidden waterfall deep in the forest! Let's go find it!' Theo nodded slowly. 'That sounds nice. I'll come, but I'll need to go at my own pace.' Percy laughed. 'That's fine! I'll fly ahead and wait for you.' And so they set off together. 3

Percy flapped his wings and chattered about everything he saw. 'Look at that big tree! Look at that butterfly! Hurry up, Theo!' But Theo plodded along, his short legs moving steadily. 'I'm coming,' he said calmly. 'I'm just enjoying the walk.' Percy sighed. 'You're so slow!' But he didn't fly too far ahead. 4

Soon Percy spotted something shiny on the ground. 'What's that?' He swooped down. It was a shiny beetle. 'Ooh, shiny!' Percy squawked. Theo caught up and looked closely. 'It's a rainbow beetle,' he said softly. 'See how its shell catches the light?' Percy tilted his head. 'I guess that's kind of neat,' he admitted. 5

They came to a stream. Percy wanted to cross right away. 'Let's go, let's go!' he urged. But Theo stopped at the edge. 'Look,' he said. 'There are fish hiding under that rock. And a frog on that lily pad.' Percy looked and saw the fish dart and the frog blink. 'Okay, that's pretty cool,' he said, and waited patiently. 6

As they walked, Percy told Theo about all the exciting things he had seen: high waterfalls, big storms, and faraway lands. Theo listened and smiled. 'You have seen many wonders,' he said. 'But have you ever watched a snail cross a leaf?' Percy shook his head. 'No, that sounds boring.' Theo just smiled and kept walking. 7

The path grew steeper, and the sound of rushing water grew louder. 'We must be close!' Percy squawked, flapping his wings. Theo plodded on, his cap bobbing. 'I can hear it,' he said. 'It sounds like a big waterfall.' Percy could hardly contain his excitement. 'Come on, Theo! Let's hurry!' 8

Finally, they pushed through a curtain of ferns and there it was: a sparkling waterfall tumbling into a clear blue pool. Mist floated in the air, and a rainbow danced in the spray. 'Wow!' Percy shouted, flying loops in the air. 'It's amazing!' Theo stood quietly and took it all in with a happy sigh. 9

Percy dove and splashed in the pool, chattering with joy. 'This is the best day ever!' He flew up and let the mist tickle his feathers. Then he noticed Theo sitting still on a rock. 'What are you doing?' Percy asked. 'Just watching,' Theo said. 'The water makes music, and the moss feels soft.' Percy landed beside him. 10

Percy tried to sit still. At first, he wanted to jump up and shout. But then he heard the music of the water and felt the cool mist on his beak. 'It is kind of nice,' he whispered. Theo smiled. 'Quiet can be exciting too.' Percy nodded. 'I think I understand now.' They sat together for a long, peaceful moment. 11

Then Theo said, 'Look down there.' He pointed a slow foot. In a tiny pool below the waterfall, dozens of little frogs were swimming. 'I would have missed that,' Percy said. 'I was too busy splashing.' He watched the frogs with wide amber eyes. 'It's like a secret world,' he said softly. Theo nodded happily. 12

Percy had an idea. 'Let's explore together!' He flew up and called out what he saw from above: 'There's a mossy cave! And a log bridge!' Theo followed below and showed Percy the little things: tiny flowers, a bird's nest, and a shiny pebble. They made a great team, each noticing different wonders. 13

As the sun began to set, they started home. Percy flew slower this time, matching Theo's pace. 'Thank you for coming with me,' Percy said. 'I learned that quiet things can be exciting too.' Theo smiled. 'And I learned that a noisy friend can make an adventure fun.' They both laughed and walked on together. 14

Back at the fern patch, Theo took off his cap and stretched his neck. 'That was a wonderful day,' he said. Percy perched on a branch above him. 'It was! And we can go on another adventure soon. Maybe a noisy one, maybe a quiet one.' Theo nodded. 'As long as we go together.' And they agreed to meet again the next day. 15

So Percy the parrot and Theo the tortoise became the best of friends. They were very different, but they enjoyed each other's company. Percy still loved to chatter, and Theo still liked to take his time. But now Percy noticed quiet wonders, and Theo enjoyed a good squawk now and then. And that, they knew, was the best adventure of all.
