🎧 Listen to the Story · 6:44

Pip is a small penguin chick with bright blue eyes and a red scarf knitted by his grandmother, living on a rocky shore with his penguin family. He loves to stand on a high rock and gaze at the icy sea, dreaming of what lies beyond the horizon. One morning a fierce snowstorm sweeps across the shore and carries him far from home, leaving him alone on a strange, snowy beach where the rocks look different and the water is quiet.

There he meets Sammy, a young seal pup with spotted grey fur and a blue neckerchief, who has also been blown away from his family. The two become a team: Pip's sharp eyes can spot distant landmarks like an iceberg shaped like a boot, while Sammy can swim through cold, icy water and find fish. Together they cross the bay, rest when tired, share stories, and navigate a tricky channel full of floating ice, learning that each of them is brave and clever in different ways.

This gentle tale for young readers is about friendship, cooperation, and helping one another find the way home. It shows children that being lost is less frightening when you trust a friend, and that different abilities become a strength when shared. The story closes with a promise to meet again each winter, leaving readers with a warm sense of loyalty and hope.

A Chapter from the Book

The Penguin and the Seal Jane MEADOW

Pip was a small penguin chick with a black back, a white belly, and bright blue eyes. He wore a little red scarf that his grandmother had knitted. Pip lived on a rocky shore with his penguin family. He loved to stand on a high rock and look out at the wide, icy sea. "One day, I'll see what's beyond the horizon," he chirped. 1

One morning, the sky turned dark and the wind began to howl. A big snowstorm swept across the shore, swirling snow in every direction. Pip held on tight to his scarf, but the wind was too strong. It lifted him up and carried him far, far away from his family. "Help!" he called, but the wind just blew harder. 2

When the storm finally stopped, Pip found himself on a strange, snowy beach. He was all alone. The rocks looked different, and the sea was quiet. Pip felt a little scared. "Where am I?" he wondered. "How will I ever find my way home?" He wrapped his red scarf tighter and looked around for help. 3

Just then, a young seal pup popped out of the icy water. His grey fur was spotted, and he wore a blue neckerchief. "Hello!" said the seal. "I'm Sammy. Are you lost?" Pip nodded. "I'm Pip. The storm blew me away from my family." Sammy smiled. "Don't worry. I was blown away too. Maybe we can help each other." 4

Pip and Sammy sat on the snowy beach and talked. Pip told Sammy about his home, with its tall icebergs and noisy penguin colony. Sammy told Pip about his home, a cozy cove with lots of fish and friendly seals. "But I don't know which way to go," Sammy said. "Everything looks the same." Pip looked around and thought hard. 5

Pip climbed onto a high rock and stood on his tiptoes. He looked far across the water. "I can see a big iceberg shaped like a boot!" he called down. "And beyond it, a line of dark rocks." Sammy was impressed. "You have sharp eyes, Pip!" he said. "I can swim through icy water and find fish, but I can't see far. We make a good team!" 6

Sammy dove into the water and swam in circles. "The water is cold, but I'm used to it," he said. "Hop on my back, Pip. I'll carry you across the bay." Pip held on tight to Sammy's smooth fur. Sammy swam fast and strong. Pip kept looking ahead. "A little to the left!" he shouted. "I see a big rock with snow on top!" 7

They traveled for a long time. Sometimes Sammy swam, and sometimes Pip walked on the ice. When Sammy got tired, Pip found a safe spot to rest. When Pip got cold, Sammy wrapped his warm flippers around him. They shared stories and laughed. "You're brave, Sammy," said Pip. "And you're clever, Pip," said Sammy. "We'll get home together." 8

One day, they came to a wide, icy channel. The water was full of floating chunks of ice. "This looks tricky," said Sammy. "But I can swim through it. Hold on tight!" Pip climbed onto Sammy's back. Sammy zigzagged between the ice chunks, careful and quick. Pip watched for danger. "This way!" he called. "There's a clear path ahead!" 9

After many days, Pip spotted something familiar. "That iceberg!" he cried. "It's shaped like a boot! That's near my home!" Sammy swam faster. Soon, they saw a rocky shore dotted with penguins. Pip's family was there, waiting. "Pip!" they called. "You're safe!" Pip hugged his mother and father, then turned to Sammy. "You saved me," he said. 10

But Sammy looked sad. "I'm happy for you, Pip, but I still don't know the way to my cove. I've been away so long." Pip smiled. "Don't worry, Sammy. I'll help you. Remember, I have sharp eyes. We'll find your home together." Pip climbed onto a high rock and looked far across the sea. "I see a cove with a big rock shaped like a fish!" 11

Pip and Sammy set off again. This time, Pip led the way. "Turn right at the fish rock!" he called. Sammy swam through the icy water, and Pip guided him. Finally, they reached a cozy cove full of seals. Sammy's family rushed to greet him. "Sammy! You're back!" they barked. Sammy introduced Pip to everyone. "This is my friend Pip. He helped me find my way home." 12

The seals cheered for Pip. They threw a big party with fish and snowballs. Pip and Sammy played until the sun went down. The next morning, Pip had to leave to go back to his own family. "I'll miss you," said Sammy. "I'll miss you too," said Pip. "But we can meet again. Every winter, we can come to this beach and play." 13

Sammy nodded. "I promise," he said. "Every winter, I'll be here." Pip promised too. They hugged goodbye. Pip waddled back to his family, and Sammy dove into the sea. As Pip walked, he thought about his friend. He knew that working together had made them a great team. And he knew that friendship was the best thing of all. 14

Winter came again, and Pip waddled to the meeting beach. Sammy was already there, waiting with a big smile. "You came!" said Sammy. "Of course!" said Pip. They spent the whole day together, swimming and playing and telling stories. And every winter after that, they met again, just as they promised. Their friendship grew stronger each year.
