🎧 Listen to the Story · 7:38

On a bright, icy morning, a penguin named Pim waddles along the shore of his frozen world, wishing he had someone to share its quiet beauty with. His wish comes true when a snow petrel named Sisi swoops down from the sky, and the two become fast friends, teaching each other how to slide down snowy slopes and glide on the wind. Their happy meeting sets the stage for a story about friendship, trust, and what it means to look out for one another.

When a group of lost young chicks huddles nearby, frightened and far from a safe place to rest, Pim and Sisi offer to help. Sisi scouts the coast from above while Pim leads the little birds along the ice below, and together they guide the chicks through slippery passages, biting wind, and falling snow. Along the way the chicks learn to be brave, and Pim and Sisi show patience and calm when the weather turns rough and the way ahead is hard to see.

This gentle children's tale follows one journey from beginning to end, showing young readers how teamwork and kindness can carry a group through difficulty. It is suited to children who enjoy animal stories set in snowy places, and to parents and teachers looking for a warm read about friendship and helping others.

The Penguin and the Snow Petrel Jane MEADOW

On a bright, icy morning, a penguin named Pim waddled along the shore. His black back and white belly shone in the sun, and his orange feet left little prints on the snow. Pim loved the quiet of the frozen world, but today he wished for someone to share it with. He looked out at the wide blue sea and smiled. 1

Suddenly, a white shape swooped down from the sky. It was a snow petrel named Sisi, with pure white feathers and black wingtips that flashed like shadows. She landed lightly on a rock near Pim. "Hello!" she chirped. "I'm Sisi. I've been flying all morning, and I'm looking for a friend." Pim's round amber eyes twinkled. "I'm Pim," he said. "And I'm glad you're here." 2

Pim and Sisi became fast friends. Pim showed Sisi how to slide on his belly down a snowy slope, and Sisi showed Pim how to glide on the wind. They laughed and played until the sun dipped low. "The ice is beautiful," Sisi said, "but I miss the open sky." Pim nodded. "And I love the ice, but it's more fun with you." They promised to meet again the next day. 3

The next morning, as Pim and Sisi sat together on the ice, they heard tiny peeps. A group of young birds huddled nearby, their grey-and-white down fluffed against the cold. Their big dark eyes looked worried. "We're lost," one chick whispered. "We need a safe place to rest, but we don't know where to go." Pim stepped forward. "Don't worry," he said gently. "We'll help you." 4

Sisi fluttered her wings. "I can fly above and look for a shelter," she said. "I'll scout the coast and find a cozy spot." Pim nodded. "And I'll lead the way along the ice. We'll work together." The chicks looked at each other and smiled. "Thank you!" they chirped. So the journey began, with Sisi soaring high and Pim waddling at the front, the little birds following close behind. 5

The first part of the journey was easy. Pim led the chicks along the smooth ice, and Sisi looped and dived above them, calling out, "This way! The coast is clear!" The chicks grew braver with each step. They giggled as they slipped and slid, and Pim always waited patiently. "You're doing great!" he encouraged. The sun sparkled on the snow, and the sea sang beside them. 6

After a while, the ice became bumpy and the wind blew colder. The chicks huddled together, their tiny wings shivering. "I'm tired," one peeped. "And my feet are cold," said another. Pim stopped and turned around. "Let's rest for a moment," he said kindly. "We'll take it slow." Sisi flew down and landed beside them. "I see a big rock ahead," she said. "We can shelter behind it for a bit." 7

They reached the rock, and the chicks snuggled close. Pim stood guard, his sturdy body blocking the wind. Sisi kept watch from above. "You're safe," Pim said softly. "We'll stay here until you're ready." The chicks felt warmer and braver. "You're a good friend, Pim," one said. Pim smiled. "So is Sisi," he replied. "Friends help each other." After a short rest, they were ready to go on. 8

The journey continued along the winding coast. Sisi flew ahead, her white wings bright against the blue sky. Suddenly, she saw a narrow passage between two icy cliffs. "Follow me!" she called. "There's a shortcut!" Pim led the chicks through the passage, but it was slippery. One chick almost fell, but Pim caught it with his flipper. "I've got you," he said. "Just hold on." 9

On the other side, the wind howled, and snow began to fall. The chicks could barely see. "I can't find the way!" Sisi cried, her voice carried away by the wind. Pim stayed calm. "Stay close to me," he told the chicks. "We'll wait for Sisi to guide us." Sisi circled above, searching for a landmark. Then she spotted a familiar shape: a tall, pointed iceberg. "This way!" she called. "Follow the iceberg!" 10

Pim led the chicks toward the iceberg, and Sisi flew lower, her black wingtips showing the path. But the wind grew stronger, and the snow swirled thicker. The chicks huddled together, frightened. "We're lost!" they cried. Pim raised his voice. "We're not lost! We have each other. Sisi, can you see anything?" Sisi squinted through the snow. "Yes!" she shouted. "There's a dark shape ahead. It looks like a cave!" 11

Sisi dived down and led Pim and the chicks toward the cave. As they got closer, they saw it was a cozy shelter in the side of a snowy hill, protected from the wind. "In here!" Sisi called. Pim guided the chicks inside, one by one. The cave was warm and dry, with soft snow on the floor. The chicks collapsed, exhausted but safe. "We made it!" they cheered. Pim and Sisi smiled at each other. 12

Inside the shelter, the chicks snuggled together and fell fast asleep. Pim and Sisi sat at the entrance, watching the snow fall gently outside. "We did it," Sisi whispered. "We couldn't have done it without you," Pim said. "You found the way." Sisi nuzzled his shoulder. "And you kept them safe." They sat in friendly silence, listening to the soft breathing of the sleeping chicks.
