The Puppy and the Piglet

🎧 Listen to the Story · 7:12

On a sunny farm, a small puppy named Toby and his best friend Pippa the piglet spend their days chasing butterflies and exploring every corner of the fields. Toby, with his golden-brown fur and red collar, and Pippa, round and pink with a yellow polka-dot scarf, do everything together. One morning a new smell leads them past the barn and under the fence to an old wooden cart hidden behind some bushes, and inside they find a heap of forgotten toys: colorful balls, a jump rope, a shiny whistle and a soft rag doll.

Rather than keep the discovery to themselves, the two friends turn the cart into a clubhouse and invite the other farm animals to share it. Bertie the duck becomes the announcer, gentle Daisy the cow brings snacks, and when little Lily the lamb cannot reach the toys, Toby and Pippa make sure she is lifted up and given a ball of her own. When rain keeps everyone indoors, the fun moves into the barn, and when the cart's wheel breaks, all the animals work together to mend it.

The story follows a simple arc about friendship, inclusion and teamwork, showing young readers that a shared discovery becomes more valuable when it is opened up to others and that problems are easier to solve together. Told in short, warm scenes with a cast of friendly farm animals, it suits children at the picture-book and early-reader stage, and works well as a read-aloud story for parents, carers or teachers looking for a gentle tale about kindness and cooperation.

A Chapter from the Book

The Puppy and the Piglet Jane MEADOW

On a sunny farm, where the grass was soft and the sky was blue, lived a small puppy named Toby. Toby had warm goldenbrown fur, floppy ears, and a bright red collar with a silver bone tag. His tail wagged all day long, especially when he was with his best friend, Pippa the piglet. Pippa was round and pink with a yellow polka-dot scarf. They did everything together. 1

Each morning, Toby and Pippa met by the big oak tree. Toby would bounce and bark, and Pippa would giggle and snort. They chased butterflies, rolled in the clover, and explored every corner of the farm. But one day, Toby's nose twitched. He smelled something new. "Come on, Pippa!" he yelped. "Let's follow that smell!" Pippa's curly tail wiggled with excitement. 2

They followed the scent past the barn, under the fence, and into a tall grassy corner. There, hidden behind some bushes, was an old wooden cart. Its wheels were crooked, and its paint was faded. But inside the cart, something sparkled. Toby and Pippa peeked over the edge. Their eyes grew wide. "Wow!" they whispered together. "What a surprise!" 3

The cart was full of forgotten toys! There were colorful balls, a jump rope, a shiny whistle, and a soft rag doll. Toby found a red ball and bounced it on his nose. Pippa found a little tea set and pretended to pour tea. "This is amazing!" said Pippa. "But what should we do with all these toys?" Toby's tail wagged fast. "Let's make a clubhouse!" he barked. 4

Pippa clapped her hooves. "A clubhouse! I can plan it!" She found some old boards and a bucket. Toby pushed and pulled the cart to a shady spot under the oak tree. Pippa arranged the toys neatly inside. They hung a sign that said "Friends Clubhouse" with a big smiley face. "Now we need friends to share it with!" said Toby. "Let's invite everyone!" 5

Just then, Bertie the duck waddled by. He wore a small blue cap and tilted his head. "Quack! What are you two up to?" he asked. Toby bounced over. "We found toys and made a clubhouse! Want to join?" Bertie's eyes sparkled. "I'd love to! I can be the announcer!" He quacked loudly, "Friends, come to the clubhouse!" The invitation echoed across the farm. 6

Daisy the cow heard the quacking. She was large and gentle, with black-and-white patches and a green ribbon on her tail. "Moo! A clubhouse? How lovely!" She walked over slowly. "I'll bring some snacks for everyone." She carried a basket of apples and carrots. "Welcome, Daisy!" said Toby and Pippa. "You can be our snack helper!" Daisy smiled warmly. "I'd be happy to help." 7

Soon, more animals arrived. The chickens clucked and the sheep baaed. They all gathered around the cart. Toby showed them the toys. "We can play catch, jump rope, and have tea parties!" Pippa said. Bertie the duck announced each game with a loud quack. Everyone laughed and cheered. The clubhouse was the happiest place on the farm. 8

But then, a little lamb named Lily looked sad. She was too small to reach the toys in the cart. "I can't play," she bleated. Toby noticed right away. "Don't worry, Lily! We'll help you." He asked Daisy to lift Lily up gently. Pippa found a soft ball just for her. Lily's face lit up with a big smile. "Thank you!" she said. Everyone felt included. 9

The next day, it rained. The animals were stuck inside the barn. "What can we do?" asked Bertie. Pippa had an idea. "Let's bring the clubhouse fun inside!" They carried the toys to the barn and set up a game corner. Toby started a game of hide-and-seek. Daisy told stories. Bertie quacked silly songs. The rain didn't matter. The clubhouse was wherever friends were together. 10

One afternoon, the old cart's wheel broke. "Oh no!" cried Pippa. "Our clubhouse will fall apart!" Toby looked at the broken wheel. "Don't worry, Pippa. We can fix it together." He called all the animals. "Teamwork!" he barked. Daisy pushed the cart while Bertie found a strong stick. The chickens brought string. Everyone worked together to mend the wheel. "Hooray!" they cheered when it was fixed. 11

The clubhouse was even better than before. They added a little door and a window. Pippa painted flowers on the sides. Toby hung a bell that rang when friends arrived. "Now it's perfect," said Pippa. "Because we made it together." The animals clapped and danced. They knew that working as a team made everything more fun. 12

That evening, they had a big party in the clubhouse. Daisy brought a cake made of apples and oats. Bertie quacked a happy song. Toby and Pippa danced with Lily and the others. The sun set, painting the sky pink and gold. "This is the best day ever," said Toby. "And it's all because of our friends," said Pippa. They smiled at each other. 13

From that day on, the clubhouse was the heart of the farm. Toby and Pippa woke up early to open it. They played games, told stories, and shared snacks. Every day brought a new adventure. "Friendship makes ordinary days exciting," said Toby. "Yes!" agreed Pippa. "Especially with toys and a clubhouse!" They laughed and ran to play with their friends.
