In the heart of the woodland lives a small rabbit named Rosie, with soft brown fur, a cream belly and a sky blue polka-dot scarf around her neck. One morning, while nibbling clover, she hears a rustling in the ferns and discovers a family of hedgehogs who have just moved into the woodland. Mama Hedgehog, wrapped in a mustard yellow shawl, and little Pip, with a green leaf tucked behind his ear, look lost and worried, and their trembling legs show how strange everything feels to them.
Rosie's kind heart gives a happy thump, and she offers to help. She leads the hedgehogs along a smooth mossy trail to the stream, introduces them to Ollie Owl in his tall oak tree and to a family of mice who share berries with Pip, and finally shows them a cozy hollow surrounded by ferns where a hedgehog family could make a home. The next morning she returns with a basket of flowers, teaches Pip a hopping game, and soon the other animals arrive with feathers, nuts and seeds, so the newcomers feel truly welcome.
The story follows Rosie's simple, patient kindness and Pip's growing confidence as he moves from hiding behind his mother to playing with new friends. It shows young readers how small gestures, a friendly greeting, a guided path, a shared berry, can turn a frightening new place into a home, and it closes on the friendship that grows between Rosie and the hedgehogs. The gentle woodland setting, the animal neighbors and the warm tone make it suited to young children and to adults reading aloud at bedtime.

A Chapter from the Book
The Rabbit's New Neighbor Jane MEADOW
In the heart of the woodland, where sunlight danced through the leaves, lived a small rabbit named Rosie. She had soft warm brown fur, a cream belly, and long upright ears with pink inside. Around her neck, she wore a sky blue scarf with tiny white polka dots. Every morning, Rosie hopped along the winding paths, greeting the trees and the flowers. 1
One day, as Rosie nibbled on a juicy clover, she heard a rustling sound. She peeked through the ferns and saw a family of hedgehogs. They had soft brown spines with lighter tan tips and tiny round ears. The mother wore a knitted mustard yellow shawl, and a little one had a green leaf tucked behind his ear. They looked lost and a bit worried. 2
Rosie's kind heart gave a happy thump. She hopped closer and smiled her friendliest smile. 'Hello there!' she called softly. 'I'm Rosie. Are you new to our woodland?' The mother hedgehog clutched her shawl and nodded shyly. The little hedgehog peeked out from behind her, his big dark eyes full of questions. 3
The mother hedgehog spoke in a gentle voice. 'We moved here yesterday. Everything is so big and strange. I'm Mama Hedgehog, and this is Pip.' Pip hid behind his mother's round body, but his curious nose twitched. Rosie noticed how the hedgehogs' little legs trembled. 'Don't worry,' she said. 'I'll help you find your way.' 4
Rosie pointed with her paw. 'The woodland has many paths. Some are safe, and some are bumpy. I'll show you the best ones.' She led them along a smooth, mossy trail. 'This path goes to the stream,' she explained. 'The water is fresh and cool.' Mama Hedgehog followed closely, her mustard shawl fluttering. Pip took a tiny step forward. 5
As they hopped along, Rosie said, 'There are friendly neighbors here. Let me introduce you.' First, she led them to a tall oak tree. On a branch sat Ollie Owl, a plump bird with soft grey brown feathers and a pale cream face. He wore small round spectacles and peered down with kind amber eyes. 'Hello, Ollie!' Rosie called. 'We have new neighbors!' 6
Ollie Owl adjusted his spectacles and gave a warm hoot. 'Welcome, little ones!' he said. 'The woodland is a wonderful place. If you ever need help, just call.' Mama Hedgehog relaxed a little and thanked him. Pip peeked out and whispered, 'Hello, Mr. Owl.' Ollie's eyes twinkled. 'A pleasure to meet you, Pip.' 7
Next, Rosie led them to a burrow where a family of mice lived. The mice were busy gathering seeds. 'These are my friends,' Rosie said. 'They know every secret of the woodland.' The mice squeaked happily and offered the hedgehogs some berries. Pip's eyes grew wide with delight. He took a berry and nibbled it. 'Thank you!' he said, feeling braver. 8
As the sun began to set, Rosie showed them one more path. 'This one leads to a cozy hollow,' she said. 'It's perfect for a hedgehog family.' They followed the winding trail until they reached a soft, mossy hollow surrounded by ferns. 'It's lovely!' Mama Hedgehog exclaimed. 'We can make our home here.' 9
Pip scampered around the hollow, his little green leaf bobbing. 'I like it here!' he cried. 'The paths are fun, and the neighbors are nice.' Mama Hedgehog wrapped her shawl around her and smiled at Rosie. 'Thank you for showing us the way. We felt so lost before.' Rosie's whiskers twitched with happiness. 10
The next morning, Rosie hopped back to the hollow with a basket of flowers. She found Mama Hedgehog arranging twigs and leaves. 'I brought you something to make your home cheerful,' Rosie said. Mama Hedgehog's eyes glistened. 'You are so kind, Rosie. We already feel welcome.' Pip ran up and hugged Rosie's leg. 'Will you play with me?' he asked. 11
Rosie laughed. 'Of course!' She taught Pip a hopping game, and they bounced around the hollow. Mama Hedgehog watched, her heart full. 'You know,' she said, 'when we arrived, I was so worried. But your kindness changed everything.' Rosie smiled. 'That's what neighbors are for,' she said. 'To help each other.' 12
Soon, the other woodland animals came to visit. Ollie Owl brought a soft feather for Pip's collection. The mice brought nuts and seeds. Everyone gathered in the hollow, sharing stories and laughter. Pip showed his new friends the leaf behind his ear and told them about his adventures. The hedgehogs felt truly at home. 13
From that day on, Rosie and the hedgehogs were the best of friends. They explored the safe pathways together and visited their neighbors often. Mama Hedgehog's shawl fluttered as she walked proudly beside Rosie. Pip's big dark eyes sparkled with joy. The woodland felt warmer and happier with the new family in it. 14
Rosie learned that a little kindness can make a big difference. When someone new arrives, a friendly hello and a helping hand can turn worry into happiness. The hedgehogs learned that even in a strange place, kindness can make it feel like home. And the woodland became a place where everyone looked out for each other. 15
So if you ever see a new neighbor, remember Rosie the rabbit. A warm smile and a kind word can help them settle in. The woodland animals still talk about how Rosie welcomed the hedgehogs, and how their friendship grew. And every time a new family moves in, the woodland feels a little warmer, thanks to kindness.
