🎧 Listen to the Story · 6:34

On a wide, sunny savanna, Zara the zebra and Gina the giraffe are best friends who love helping the smaller animals. When the day grows very hot and the rabbits, tortoises and baby antelopes can no longer find shade, the two friends decide to build a shelter by the old acacia tree. Zara uses her strong teeth to gather soft grass near the ground, while Gina stretches her long neck to pull down leafy branches for a thick roof. The little animals join in too, carrying small twigs and leaves, and the shelter slowly takes shape.

As the sun moves across the sky, the friends discover that the work is not quite finished and they must adjust the roof and walls to keep the shade inside. Through it all, Zara's cheerful energy and Gina's patient thinking show how different strengths can fit together perfectly. The story follows their teamwork step by step, from the first bundle of grass to the moment the tired little animals lie down in the cool, quiet shelter.

This gentle tale is written for young children and for anyone reading aloud to them. It offers a simple lesson about cooperation, kindness and caring for others, showing that a hard job becomes easy and fun when friends share it. The warm savanna setting and the animal characters make the message easy for early readers to understand and enjoy.

A Chapter from the Book

The Zebra and the Giraffe Jane MEADOW

On the wide, sunny savanna, the grass was golden and the sky was bright blue. Zara the zebra trotted through the tall grass, her black and white stripes shining in the sun. She loved the warm breeze and the sound of birds singing. Today was going to be a very hot day, she could tell. Her friend Gina the giraffe was waiting by the old acacia tree. 1

Gina the giraffe was the tallest animal on the savanna. Her long neck reached high into the branches, and her golden coat with brown patches gleamed. She smiled down at Zara with her big, kind eyes. 'Good morning, Zara!' she said. 'The sun is already very hot today.' Zara nodded and swished her fluffy tail. 'Yes, and the smaller animals will need a cool place to rest.' 2

Zara and Gina were best friends. They did everything together. Zara was cheerful and hardworking, and Gina was patient and thoughtful. They loved helping the other animals on the savanna. The little rabbits, the tortoises, and the baby antelopes often came to them for help. Today, the two friends looked at each other and knew just what to do. 3

The sun climbed higher and higher. The savanna grew hotter and hotter. The little animals began to pant and look for shade. 'It's too hot!' squeaked a tiny rabbit. 'My shell is baking!' said a tortoise. Zara and Gina saw their friends were uncomfortable. 'We must find a cool place for everyone,' said Zara. 'Let's build a shelter!' said Gina. 4

Zara and Gina looked around the savanna. They needed a big, shady spot. 'I can gather soft grass near the ground,' said Zara. 'And I can reach the high branches,' said Gina. 'Together, we can build a wonderful shelter!' They smiled at each other. They knew that working together would make the job easy and fun. 5

Zara trotted to a patch of soft, green grass. She used her strong teeth to gather big bundles of it. She carried the grass in her mouth and piled it near the old acacia tree. The little animals watched with wide eyes. 'Zara is making a soft floor for us!' said the rabbit. Zara nodded and kept working, her striped coat shimmering. 6

Gina stretched her long neck up to the highest branches. She carefully pulled down leafy twigs and branches. With her gentle mouth, she laid them over the top of the shelter. The leaves made a thick, green roof. 'This will block the hot sun,' she said. The little animals cheered. Gina's long neck made the hard job look easy. 7

Zara and Gina worked side by side. Zara gathered more grass for the walls, and Gina reached for more leaves. They talked and laughed as they worked. 'This is fun!' said Zara. 'Yes, teamwork makes everything better,' said Gina. The little animals helped too, carrying small twigs and grass. Everyone was part of the team. 8

The shelter grew bigger and bigger. Zara packed the grass tightly to make soft beds. Gina layered the leaves to make a thick roof. The little animals gathered around, eager to help. 'Can we do anything?' asked the tortoise. 'Yes,' said Zara. 'You can bring small leaves for the floor.' The tortoise happily joined in. 9

The sun was at its hottest. But under the shelter, it was cool and dark. Zara arranged the grass into cozy nests. Gina made sure the leafy roof had no gaps. The little animals began to move in. 'It's so cool!' said the rabbit. 'I can rest now,' said the tortoise. Zara and Gina smiled at each other. 10

Finally, the shelter was finished. It was big and comfortable, with soft grass on the floor and a thick leafy roof. All the little animals crowded inside, happy and cool. 'Thank you, Zara and Gina!' they cheered. Zara and Gina stood outside, proud of their work. 'We did it together,' said Zara. 'Yes, and it was easy,' said Gina. 11

But then, a little antelope said, 'The sun is moving, and soon it will shine into the shelter.' Zara and Gina looked at each other. 'We can fix that,' said Gina. She stretched her neck and pulled more leaves to block the sun. Zara gathered more grass to make the walls higher. Soon, the shelter was shady again. 12

The little animals were so happy. They lay down on the soft grass and closed their eyes. The shelter was cool and quiet. Zara and Gina sat nearby, watching over their friends. 'We make a good team,' said Zara. 'We do,' said Gina. 'Your strong teeth and my long neck are perfect together.' They laughed softly. 13

As the afternoon passed, the little animals slept peacefully. The savanna was still hot, but under the shelter, it was cool. Zara and Gina rested too, knowing they had helped their friends. 'Teamwork makes hard things easy,' said Zara. 'And fun,' added Gina. They watched the leaves rustle in the breeze. 14

When the sun began to set, the little animals woke up. They felt refreshed and happy. 'You are the best friends ever!' said the rabbit. Zara and Gina beamed. 'We are glad to help,' they said. The savanna was peaceful, and everyone was grateful for the cool shelter. Zara and Gina knew they would always work together.
